Student Services Newsletter - May

Welcome Summer Science Students
The Faculty of Education would like to welcome the first cohort of our new Summer Science option for the Concurrent BEd program. Classes and community field placements began May 3 and will continue throughout the summer to July 30. The intent of this program option is to alleviate timetabling difficulties faced by students who have science or math labs during the fall/winter sessions. Intermediate/Senior teacher candidates who have science and math areas as their two teaching subjects (biology, chemistry, physics, general science, mathematics and environmental science) will be able to complete their Education courses during the summer months through an intensive and integrated approach to teaching.

Important Note for BEd (French)
For the Fall/Winter 2010-2011 academic session, both ED2s and ED3s will be taking the EDUC 3110 Teaching and Learning French Immersion course. There will only be one section and all the ED2s and ED3s will enrol. This means EDUC 3100 Teaching French in Elementary Classrooms will not be offered. Also, PRJL and PRJM will be taught with PRJM in the fall and PRJL in the winter. Last year the two courses ran all year on alternating weeks. That will not be the case for FW10. Online Course Evaluations for Consecutive BEd
Friday, May 7, 2010, is the last day for online course evaluations for the Consecutive BEd courses. Course evaluations provide an opportunity for you to give your instructors feedback about your courses. To complete the online course evaluations, visit http://courseevaluations.yorku.ca. Your input is very valuable to us. It will help improve and enhance student experience and satisfaction in courses. All your input is kept completely confidential and no information is released to instructors before final grades are submitted. Note: At this time not all courses can be evaluated online. Some will be evaluated through the use of paper forms during class time.

Fall/Winter 2010-2011 Enrolment
Enrolment window assignments can be found online at http://www.yorku.ca/yorkweb/cs.htm. Click on “Find out when I can enrol” under the “COURSES & ENROLMENT >>” heading. Enrolment will occur throughout the entire month of June. Intermediate/Senior teacher candidates should read the note below on I/S Teaching Subjects and all ED3 teacher candidates should read the note about the Teaching Religious Education EDUC 3000/EDUC 3000A course.

I/S Teaching Subjects
There is potential for conflicts or repetition in choosing similar teaching subjects, such as ones that fall under the business, computer studies or economics, geography, environmental science and science category. Although you may select these combinations, we would like to advise you that you may have the same course director and same course outline for both teaching subject classes. Some of the above subjects (e.g. business studies), depending on numbers, may only be available through independent study courses. When selecting your two teaching subjects, candidates should note the academic requirements for each subject and the prerequisites for curriculum and instruction courses. For the intermediate/senior program a minimum of 24 credits (four full university courses) in the subject area must be taken in order to register in the teaching subject curriculum and instruction course. A candidate requires a minimum of 36 credits (six full university courses) in one teaching subject area and 24 credits (four full university courses) in the other area to graduate.

Teaching Religious Education EDUC 3000/EDUC 3000A course
This course does not count as an Education elective. Teaching Religious Education in Roman Catholic Separate Schools (ED/EDUC 3000 3.00) is restricted to ED3 students. Although this optional course cannot be counted for credit towards your education degree; however, it may be eligible for credit towards your undergraduate degree program (consult advising office for home Faculty). Students should complete a Transfer of Extraneous Courses Form http://www.registrar.yorku.ca/pdf/ED-transfer_extraneous_crs.pdf, which can be found on the Registrar's Office Web site. There is an academic fee associated with this three-credit course. This course also is offered as a non-credit, non-tuition course (ED/EDUC 3000A 3.00) for students who wish to apply to Catholic boards of education but do not want this course counted towards their home Faculty.

Pay Your Fees at the Bank
The Registrar’s Office and Student Financial Services recommend that all students for FW2010 make payments for their student accounts at a bank instead of in person at Student Client Services. The advantages for students are no lineup and faster confirmation of payment in peak periods. You can pay your enrolment deposit, residence charges or course fees through telephone or online banking. The University does not accept cash nor credit card payments. For details, visit http://sfs.yorku.ca/fees/paying/.
