Welcome Consecutive BEd Students
The Faculty of Education would like to welcome the FW10 entering class for our Full-Time Consecutive BEd program. Classes begin Monday, August 30 at the specified consecutive site locations. Orientation speeches and site cheers take place at Keele campus on Thursday, September 2. Once the Fall/Winter 2010-2011 academic year begins, each student will receive a Faculty of Education email account for messages from the Faculty of Education instructors and Student Services staff throughout the year. All Faculty of Education BEd students are expected to read the monthly Student Services newsletter, which is posted on the Student Services blog. Students should contact the Course Directors at their sites for questions related to practicum. All students should ensure that they enrol in 30 credits required for the BEd. Anyone admitted conditionally due to pending graduation from their undergraduate degree will be required to submit official transcripts prior to August 1, 2010, showing proof of convocation.
I/S Teaching Subjects
There is potential for conflicts or repetition in choosing similar teaching subjects, such as ones that fall under the business, computer studies or economics, geography, environmental science and science category. Although you may select these combinations, we would like to advise you that you may have the same course director and same course outline for both teaching subject classes. Some teaching subjects (e.g. business studies), depending on numbers, may only be available through independent study courses. When selecting your two teaching subjects, candidates should note the academic requirements for each subject and the prerequisites for curriculum and instruction courses.
Summer Hours
Beginning June 1, 2010, the normal work day at York University will end at 3:30 pm every Friday during the period from June 1, 2010, to September 6, 2010 (Labour Day). Please be advised that the offices will be closed on July 1, 2010 (Canada Day) and August 2, 2010 (Civic Holiday).
Online Course Evaluations
Summer 2010 course evaluations for EDUC 3310, EDUC 3740, EDUC 3770 and INLE 2200 in Period Code J1 will be available on-line until Friday, June 11, 2010. Faculty members rely on course evaluation feedback to improve their teaching and the design of their courses. Course evaluations are also used for tenure and promotion purposes. Please take a few minutes to complete the brief course evaluation questionnaire. The process is entirely confidential. Following the submission of final grades, course evaluation results and comments are forwarded anonymously to the instructor. The online course evaluations are available on the course evaluation web site http://courseevaluations.yorku.ca.
Practicum Evaluations
All TCs should keep a copy of their final practicum reports in their personal files. Before the end of this academic year, TCs should ensure they have the reports from their mentor teachers. The Faculty of Education will not be keeping these on file.
June 2010 Convocation
Faculty of Education’s ceremonies are scheduled for Friday, June 18, 2010. For more information, visit http://www.yorku.ca/mygrad. Please remember to submit your OCT registration number to the Faculty of Education using this link: http://edu.yorku.ca/bed/octnumberform.php. We will require this number in order to send your recommendation to the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) following convocation. All graduating BEd students are responsible for sending their official transcripts to the Ontario College of Teachers. The Faculty of Education will not do this on the student's behalf. It should indicate on the transcripts that the BEd degree is conferred. After convocation, the Faculty of Education will send automatically the recommendation to OCT. Visa students may successfully complete the BEd program and will receive a Bachelor of Education degree. However, they will not be recommended to the Ontario College of Teachers to be certified to teach in Ontario since this is only available to those eligible to work in Canada (i.e. landed immigrants, permanent residents, and Canadian citizens). All ERC borrower cards expire June 4, 2010. The final date for ERC materials to be returned, and outstanding fines to be paid, is June 9, 2010. If you make any late payments after convocation, it is your responsibility to notify Judith Davidson, jdavid@edu.yorku.ca at BEd Student Services, 128 Winters College. We will require proof of payment to send your recommendation. OCT requires you to submit a Basic Criminal Record Check. If you have already submitted your basic criminal record check to OCT, please note that it must be valid 6 months prior to your certification date. Any cost related to obtaining the Criminal Record Check is the sole responsibility of the student. Processing times with police services could be quite lengthy depending on their current volume. You should begin the process immediately if you are interested in applying for a job in the teaching profession in Ontario. When you are hired by a school, you will be asked by your future employer to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening for employment purposes. This occurs at a later date.
Student Accounts and Financial Blocks
Continuing student accounts statements for May 18, 2010, have been posted on the Web. Statements are on the Web and have not been mailed. The financial blocks have been updated May 27, 2010, and will block services such as transcripts and enrolment. Blocks are posted for undergraduate students if the amount due is greater than $75. Students may drop courses but cannot add courses if there is a financial block on their student records. Late fees will be assessed when payment is not made by the due date of June 10, 2010.
Fall/Winter 2010-2011 Tuition
Tuition fees will be reviewed and approved by the Board of Governors on June 21, 2010. Following approval, tuition fees will be posted to the Web and featured on student statements within 10 days.
Police Record Checks for Toronto
Students should not rely on the OESC web site, which is currently suspended. Any cost related to obtaining the Criminal Record Check is the sole responsibility of the student. Processing times with police services could be quite lengthy depending on their current volume. A Criminal Record Check can be requested from the area in where you live, regardless of where your school or community placement is located (police services typically restrict their services to applicants who live in their jurisdictions). Students that do not have an appropriate criminal background check cannot begin their school placement and will be required to make up for days missed or become ineligible to continue in the program. The appropriate Toronto Police Services form can be obtained, completed, verified and signed by York University personnel at the Practicum Office, 108 Winters College during office hours. The form also can be found on the Toronto Police web site http://www.torontopolice.on.ca/prcp/ctd.pdf. Students only need to complete the name and address portion with driver's license, if possible. The reason for the request is "volunteer". Sign the bottom of the form where it states signature of applicant. The fee to process this form is $16.95 and is made payable to the Toronto Police Services. Personal cheques will not be accepted.

Students should not rely on the OESC web site, which is currently suspended. Effective June 1, 2010, a new York Region Police form will be in effect. This form will no longer require the signature of an agency representative. Students that do not have an appropriate criminal background check cannot begin their school placement and will be required to make up for days missed or become ineligible to continue in the program. Employees and student volunteers will be able to download the form from the York Region Police website and complete it, or obtain a form and complete it when they attend either of the following Customer Service locations: York Region Police Customer Service Unit at 16775 Yonge Street Newmarket or Customer Resource Centre at Hillcrest Mall 9350 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill. York Region Police Services can be contacted at 905-895-1221. Any cost related to obtaining the Criminal Record Check is the sole responsibility of the student. Processing times with police services could be quite lengthy depending on their current volume.
Police Record Checks for Barrie
Students should not rely on the OESC web site, which is currently suspended. If you live in Barrie, you can obtain a criminal record search that satisfies what is needed for practicum placement by presenting a completed "Consent for a Criminal Record Check for a Sexual Offence for which a pardon has been granted or issued form". Barrie Police Service can be contacted at 705-725-7025. Any cost related to obtaining the Criminal Record Check is the sole responsibility of the student. Processing times with police services could be quite lengthy depending on their current volume. Students that do not have an appropriate criminal background check cannot begin their school placement and will be required to make up for days missed or become ineligible to continue in the program.

Obtain, complete, and submit a 'Form A, Vulnerable Sector Police Records Search' sheet directly from Peel Police Headquarters, 7750 Hurontario St., Brampton. Peel Regional Police can be contacted at 905-453-2121, ext. 4390. Any cost related to obtaining the Criminal Record Check is the sole responsibility of the student. Revised Sessional Dates
On May 21, 2010, the university revised the sessional dates for the F and Y terms. This includes concurrent BEd but not any consecutive BEd courses. Classes begin on campus on September 13, 2010. Fall ED1/ED2/ED3 Concurrent and PT Consecutive BEd Orientation
Mandatory Orientation for the Concurrent and Part-Time Consecutive BEd teacher candidates will remain as originally scheduled on Tuesday, September 7, 2010. All teacher candidates are required to attend for the whole day.
Important Note for Summer Science
Practicum placements for Summer Science teacher candidates are being arranged and more information will be available in the next couple of weeks. All Summer Science students will need to attend the mandatory orientation for all ED2 students on Tuesday, September 7, 2010. Times and location will be available in August.
Important Note for BEd (French)
For BEd (French) teacher candidates who are returning from a stop out year and are entering their ED3 year, Section X has been created for EDUC 3100 Teaching and Learning French in Elementary. This will allow for students who have already completed EDUC 3110 to complete the second required course. The course EDUC 3100 Section X will be taught by Regine Grand-Pierre as an independent study. Students in ED3 of the BEd (French) program can enrol themselves in the fall term course PRIJ 3033 section G (3.00 credits) F term Sept. 8 – Dec. 7 Cat. # B93A01 Fri. 12 pm – 3 pm as well as both quarter courses for the winter PRIJ 3031 section G (1.50 credits) WD term Jan. 4 – Feb. 14 Cat. # Z70N01 Fri. 12 pm – 3 pm, PRIJ 3032 section G (1.50 credits) WE term Feb. 15 - Apr. 4 Cat. # Z99F01 Fri. 12 pm – 3 pm.
PRAC 4000
Concurrent and Part-time BEd teacher candidates cannot enrol in their practicum seminar PRAC 4000. Students will be enrolled into seminars which correspond with their placements once they are finalized in August. All ED2 and ED3 teacher candidates will meet with their seminar leaders for the first time on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at the mandatory orientation.
Mandatory ED3 Quarter Courses
All P/J and J/I teacher candidates going into ED3 should select one section of the Science & Technology quarter course and the corresponding Health & Physical Education quarter course will be added to student records in August along with the matching 3-credit Arts & Social Studies course. Fall/Winter Elective Waitlist
Education students who are interested in taking electives but have not succeeded in enrolling can complete the Elective Waitlist form. This form is located on the Faculty of Education intranet, Sharepoint, at https://sharepoint.edu.yorku.ca/sites/fedstudents/ug/default.aspx. You can find the link under forms. Please use your outlook email and password to access the Sharepoint link. You should try to enrol yourself in the course when your enrolment date occurs. Once enrolment begins and courses are full, then students can add their names to an elective waitlist. Priority on the elective waitlist will be granted to ED3 students who require the credits to graduate. Please note that the EDUC 3000/EDUC 3000A course does not count as an Education elective.

EDUC 3900 Accelerated Electives
Two new sections of EDUC 3900 Studies in Popular Culture will be created for students to take this course with international students in an accelerated mode. Enrolment is limited to 10 BEd students per term. Enrolment is open on a first-come-first-served basis to ED2 or ED3 students through the university’s online enrolment system. In the fall term, the course will be offered on Wednesdays from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm and Saturdays from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm on the following dates: Wed., Sept. 15, Sat., Sept. 18, Wed., Sept. 22, Sat., Sept. 25, Wed., Sept. 29, Sat., Oct. 2, Wed., Oct. 6, Wed., Oct. 20 and Sat. Oct. 23. In the winter term, the course will be offered on Wednesdays 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm and Saturdays 10:30 am - 3:30 pm on the following dates: Wed. Jan. 12, Sat. Jan. 15, Wed. Jan 19, Sat. Jan. 22, Wed. Jan 26, Sat. Jan 29, Wed. Feb. 2, Sat. Feb. 5, Wed. Feb. 9.
Pay Your Fees at the Bank
The Registrar’s Office and Student Financial Services recommend that all students for FW2010 make payments for their student accounts at a bank instead of in person at Student Client Services. The advantages for students are no lineup and faster confirmation of payment in peak periods. You can pay your enrolment deposit, residence charges or course fees through telephone or online banking.
