Henry Jackman Award  Each year, the University of the Toronto Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa International sponsors the Henry Jackman Award in honour of the chapter's first president.  The award ($500.00) is presented to an inspiring educator currently attending a Faculty of Education, including graduate programs, in the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario. A year's membership in the University of Toronto Chapter PDK is also awarded.

Topic - Twenty-first Century Teaching and Learning  The world is rapidly changing. New knowledge in every discipline is increasing exponentially every moment. It is impossible to keep up with new discoveries. Teachers therefore need to create learning environments that focus on process, disposition, collaboration and values rather than facts alone. Students need to be metacognitively aware of themselves as learners, able to monitor their learning and set goals to push their learning forward. Today's classrooms need to engage students in their learning through authentic, relevant inquiry.  Downloaded from http://www.curriculum.org/secretariat/snapshots/learners.html

The quotation above is taken from a page on the Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat website called “Snapshots of Effective Practice”, a site that provides short videos of effective 21st Century practices.   Keeping this quotation in mind, provide a written snapshot of one effective practice that you have used as an educator to support in a 21st century learning in today’s classroom. Your personal essay must be 500-600 words in length.  Interested candidates must submit:

  • a copy of a current student card
  • two signed, original letters of reference from persons who have played a significant role in the candidate's education
  • a short resume (maximum 2 pages), including a history of experience in education
  • a 500-600 word personal essay (any citations and references should not be included as part of the word count)

The Award committee will undertake an anonymous review of the submissions based on the following criteria:
Content

  • clear, penetrating ideas
  • mature grasp of subject
  • accurate documentation, where appropriate

Organization

  • Clear,  purposeful development of ideas
  • smooth transitions

Style

  • clear, concise writing style
  • clear sense of the audience/reader
  • focused, to the point

The deadline for submission is Monday, March 3, 2014.   Application packages should be mailed to:
Linda Massey
Ontario Principals' Council
180 Dundas Street West, 25th Floor
Toronto, Ontario
M5G 1Z8
Please submit an electronic file of the essay at the same time to lmassey@principals.ca
This year's recipient will be declared and notified by Friday, March 30, 2014. The Henry Jackman Award will be presented at the PDK Annual General Meeting and Awards Dinner, on the evening of Wednesday, April 30, 2014. The winning essay may be published in a future issue of the PDK/U of T newsletter.   If you have any questions, please email Linda Massey lmassey@principals.ca
