When corresponding with the BEd Student Services office, please send an email with your first name, surname and student ID number so that we can locate your student record. Your student ID number should not be shared with other students to email our office on your behalf. Please keep your student ID confidential.
Sessional Dates
Winter term classes begin January 4 and end April 5. Please note that Monday, April 5, 2010, is a make-up day for Friday classes. University offices will be closed on Monday February 15, for Family Day. Winter term Reading/co-Curricular Week will occur February 16-19. Awards and Bursaries
Faculty of Education bursaries and awards are granted on the basis of student financial need, with some consideration given to academic progress. Some awards will have additional criteria, which you can find on the individual award descriptions. The deadline to apply for bursaries and awards is March 1, 2010. Make sure to submit all additional information required as indicated on the description. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Current ED1/ED2 Mandatory Group Advising
For Concurrent and Part-Time Consecutive teacher candidates currently in their ED1 or ED2 year, attending one group advising session in March is mandatory for anyone planning to take Education courses September 2010. This includes any teacher candidate who is on a Stop-Out Year this year. Attendance is not necessary for anyone planning on going on a Stop-Out Year next year (Fall 2010/Winter 2011). Sessions are one hour in length and at the Keele campus, unless otherwise specified. Please arrive on time. The final schedule will be included in the Student Services newsletter for March. You do not need to RSVP for a session. The tentative schedule for group advising is as follows:

Summer Education Electives
The Faculty of Education will offer seven Education electives, which will count towards the Concurrent and Part-Time Consecutive BEd elective requirements. Because the Faculty of Education uses compressed summer sessions that the rest of the university does not use, not all the summer Education electives are published in the university’s summer lecture schedule. While two Education electives appear in the university’s summer lecture schedule, six Education electives will be offered during the summer during various periods in condensed manners. Please note that enrolment in Education electives is managed through a waitlist process. Priority is given to ED3 teacher candidates who need the credits to graduate and ED2 teacher candidates without any electives. The Student Services newsletter for the month of March will include details on how students can add their names to the Education elective waitlist once those elective courses are full. If spaces become available, students will be notified via email. The Summer Education Electives are as follows:

Convocation
The June convocation ceremony for the Full-Time Consecutive BEd program will be held on Friday, June 18, 2010, at 10:30 am. The ceremony for the Concurrent and Part-Time Consecutive program will be held on Friday, June 18, 2010, at 3:30 pm. All graduates should arrive two hours before the start of the ceremony for robing and marshalling. For specific instructions and further details, visit http://www.yorku.ca/mygrad. Teacher candidates in the Full-Time and Part-Time Consecutive BEd program do not have to apply to graduate. However, Concurrent BEd teacher candidates should apply to graduate. Please note that the Concurrent Bachelor of Education degree is awarded at the same convocation ceremony as the undergraduate degree. If a Concurrent BEd teacher candidate completes degree requirements for one degree in time for June convocation but still has missing requirements for the other degree, he/she should not expect to convocate in June with one degree and convocate in October with the other. Graduation for both degrees must be delayed until all degree requirements for both degrees have been satisfied. For instance, if you finish the 30 credits for your BEd but have outstanding credits for your BA, you cannot apply to graduate until you have both degrees completed. If you do not convocate in June 2010, then you will not be certified to teach in time for September since the next convocation occurs in October. All BEd (French) teacher candidates should note that they will graduate with a BEd in the Primary/Junior division as well as French as a Second Language (FSL) Part 1.
OCT Certification
In order to be certified to teach, three items need to be submitted to OCT – official transcripts, recommendation from a Faculty of Education, and the OCT registration number for each teacher candidate. Please remember that the Faculty of Education will send recommendations for graduating teacher candidates approximately 1-2 weeks after convocation. Please submit your OCT Registration Number online at http://edu.yorku.ca/bed/octnumberform.php. It is the responsibility of all teacher candidates to send their official transcripts for the undergraduate degree and their BEd to OCT. The transcripts must have the notation that the degree was conferred. Specify when you order your transcripts that they should be sent after graduation. Online Practicum Placement Form
ED1 and ED2 Concurrent and Part-Time Consecutive teacher candidates, except Jewish Teacher Education and BEd (French), must complete an online practicum form if they require a practicum placement for the next academic year. If you are planning to go on a Stop-Out Year starting September 2010, then you do not need to fill out this form. If you are currently on a Stop-Out Year and are planning to return September 2010, then you must fill out this form. Because York University has its own security set up (i.e. Passport York) that web browsers will not recognize, a message will indicate that the online practicum form is on an unsecure site. Please disregard the message and click “continue” to access the online form. The online form can only be submitted once so please carefully consider the day of the week and the geographic zones you wish to choose (e.g. Zone 1 – Toronto East) before going to the online form. The map for the designated geographic zones for practicum placement can be viewed at http://edu.yorku.ca/bed/Placement_Zones.jpg. All teacher candidates who require a practicum placement for Fall 2010/Winter 2011, must complete this online form by March 31; otherwise, a practicum placement will not be assigned. Concurrent BEd Stop-Out Requests
Any teacher candidate who is planning to take a Stop-Out year in Fall/Winter 2010-2011 should submit a Stop-Out Authorization Form by April 30 to 128 Winters College. To download a Stop-Out Authorization form, visit http://www.registrar.yorku.ca/pdf/stop-out_authorization.pdf. Teacher candidates who will be on a Stop-Out next year will not need to complete a practicum preference form since the Faculty of Education does not need to arrange a practicum for them until the following year.
Concurrent BEd Change of Major/Program
The Change My Program Request form must be submitted by April 30 to 128 Winters College, for any teacher candidates who wish to change certification levels or teaching subjects. Once the Fall/Winter enrolment period begins, the Faculty of Education will not allow any changes of major until the following session. Any changes made after submitting your practicum placement request form may delay your placement in schools. Learning Skills Services
The Learning Skills Services offers a range of workshops throughout the winter term in the areas related to Time Management, Reading and Note Taking, Exam Preparation, Learning Style, Academic Anxiety and Stress, Academic Writing, Memory Strategies, Study Secrets, Critical Thinking, Presentation Skills, and Math and Science Problem Solving Skills. Along with in house workshops at the Bennett Centre, the Learning Skills Services staff can also be found at the Scott Library. All workshops in the Scott Library are located in the Sound and Moving Image Library (SMIL), Screening Room 124. Students can register for these workshops on-line at: http://www.yorku.ca/cds/lss/ or in person at N110, located in the Bennett Centre for Student Services.
