Students should not rely on the OESC web site, which is currently suspended. Any cost related to obtaining the Criminal Record Check is the sole responsibility of the student. Processing times with police services could be quite lengthy depending on their current volume. A vulnerable screening Criminal Record Check can be requested from the area in where you live, regardless of where your school or community placement is located (police services typically restrict their services to applicants who live in their jurisdictions). Students that do not have an appropriate criminal background check cannot begin their school placement and will be required to make up for days missed or become ineligible to continue in the program. The advising packages were distributed before news that the OESC web site was suspended. Practicum-related inquiries should be directed to the Practicum Office at practicumoffice@edu.yorku.ca. Once students receive their police record checks, they should keep them and bring them to their practicum placements.
All ED1, ED2, and ED3 Concurrent and Part-Time Consecutive BEd teacher candidates will need to attend an all-day orientation session on September 7th. The first day for practicum placement is not September 7th. Students are required to come to orientation day on September 7th as well as attend your first practicum session in the afternoon of that day. All ED1 students will select their field experience placement from a number of options on September 7th. Most ED1 experiences do not begin until late September and in some cases October. ED2 and ED3 teacher candidates will start their school placements the week of September 30th.
Toronto
The appropriate Toronto Police Services form can be obtained, completed, verified and signed by York University personnel at the Practicum Office, 108 Winters College. Because the Toronto Police Services requires a signature from a York University representative (there are three - Grase Kim, Glenna McArdle and Mary Clabassi), it is necessary for students to come to Keele campus to obtain the signature. They can also obtain the form at the same time or if they rather fill out the form in advance, they can download the form from the Toronto Police Services web site at http://www.torontopolice.on.ca/prcp/ctd.pdf. Students only need to complete the name and address portion with driver’s license, if possible. The reason for the request is "Volunteer". They do not fill out any of the information for the "Agency Contact Person". We will do that when they come on campus. Sign the bottom of the form where it states signature of applicant. After the form is signed by students and an authorized York University representative, students need to take their form to 40 College Street. The fee to process this form is $16.95 and is made payable to the Toronto Police Services. Personal cheques will not be accepted. Toronto Police Services will mail the police record check to students' addresses once it has been cleared. Students will receive a copy of the form they completed photocopied on Toronto Police stationary and in the top right-hand corner, a paragraph will appear which should indicate that no criminal record was found. Student should keep this form and bring it to their practicum placements to show the principals, when asked.
York Region
Effective June 1, 2010, a new YRP form will be in effect. This form will no longer require the signature of an agency representative. Employees and student volunteers will be able to download the form from the York Region Police website and complete it, or obtain a form and complete it when they attend Customer Service locations.
Barrie
If you live in Barrie, Obtain a criminal record search that meets the conditions outlined by presenting a completed "Consent for a Criminal Record Check for a Sexual Offence for which a pardon has been granted or issued form". Barrie Police Service can be contacted at 705-725-7025.
