Welcome Concurrent ED1 BEd Students
The Faculty of Education would like to welcome the FW10 entering class for our Concurrent BEd program. York University sessional dates for Fall/Winter 2010-2011 were revised May 21, 2010. Classes begin Monday, September 13, 2010, at both Keele and Glendon campus locations. To view university sessional dates, visit http://www.registrar.yorku.ca/importantdates/index.htm. Once the Fall/Winter 2010-2011 academic year begins, each student will receive a Faculty of Education email account, which will include messages from faculty and Student Services staff. All Faculty of Education BEd students are expected to read the monthly Student Services newsletter, which is posted on the Student Services blog. A full-day mandatory Orientation is scheduled for 8:30 am in ACE 102 on Tuesday, September 7. 2010. At Orientation, all ED1 teacher candidates will meet with their CMYR 2100 seminar leader for the first time. To prepare for the community field placement, all students should have a completed police record check. Summer Hours
Beginning June 1, 2010, the normal work day at York University was reduced by one hour every Friday during the period from June 1, 2010, to September 6, 2010 (Labour Day). Please be advised that the offices will be closed on August 2, 2010 (Civic Holiday).

Online Course Evaluations
Summer 2010 course evaluations for EDUC 3710 and INSC 2300 in Period Code J2 will be available on-line until Friday, July 9, 2010. Faculty members rely on course evaluation feedback to improve their teaching and the design of their courses. Course evaluations are also used for tenure and promotion purposes. Please take a few minutes to complete the brief course evaluation questionnaire. The process is entirely confidential. Following the submission of final grades, course evaluation results and comments are forwarded anonymously to the instructor. Fall/Winter 2010-2011 Tuition
Fees for students in Fall/Winter 2010-2011 students are now available online at http://sfs.yorku.ca/fees/courses/. Charges will appear on July statements. Fall and full year fees will be due September 10, 2010.

Pay Your Fees at the Bank
The Registrar’s Office and Student Financial Services recommend that all students for FW2010 make payments for their student accounts at a bank instead of in person at Student Client Services. The advantages for students are no lineup and faster confirmation of payment in peak periods. You can pay your enrolment deposit, residence charges or course fees through telephone or online banking. Fall/Winter Elective Waitlist
Education students who are interested in taking electives but have not succeeded in enrolling can now complete the Elective Waitlist form. This form is located on the Sharepoint at https://sharepoint.edu.yorku.ca/sites/fedstudents/ug/default.aspx. You can find the link under forms. Please use your outlook email and password to access the Sharepoint link. Please note that you cannot add your name to the waitlist for Fall/Winter 2010-2011 elective courses since student enrolment has not yet started. You should try to enrol yourself in the course when your enrolment date occurs. Once enrolment begins and courses are full, then students can add their names to an elective waitlist. Please note that Teaching Religious Education EDUC 3000/EDUC 3000A course does not count as an Education elective.

Winter Term EDUC 3900 Accelerated Elective
Spaces are still available for the winter section of accelerated course EDUC 3900 Studies in Popular Culture, which will be taken with international students. Enrolment is limited to 10 BEd students per term. Enrolment is open on a first-come-first-served basis to ED2 or ED3 students through the university’s online enrolment system. In the winter term, the course will be offered on Wednesdays 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm and Saturdays 10:30 am - 3:30 pm on the following dates: Wed. Jan. 12, Sat. Jan. 15, Wed. Jan 19, Sat. Jan. 22, Wed. Jan 26, Sat. Jan 29, Wed. Feb. 2, Sat. Feb. 5, Wed. Feb. 9.

Disability and Society Course
Concurrent Education students are invited to enrol in AP/SOSC 3920 6.00, Disability and Society, taught by Professor Neita Israelite from the Faculty of Education. This 6 credit, full-year course considers historic, socio-cultural and educational perspectives on what it means to be disabled in our society. Education students in the past have enjoyed the course and found it to have important applications to their teaching careers. The course is offered on Mondays, 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. This course does not count towards an Education elective but may be counted towards your undergraduate degree.

Teaching Religious Education Course
The course EDUC 3000 Teaching Religious Education is recommended by some Catholic school boards and may be counted for credit towards an undergraduate degree (see advising office for home faculty). The course EDUC 3000A is the non-credit version of the course and tuition is waived. Neither EDUC 3000 nor EDUC 3000A can be counted as an Education elective by part-time consecutive and concurrent teacher candidates. Spaces are available in the Teaching Religious Education EDUC 3000 and EDUC 3000A at Keele campus as well as in the EDUC 3000A 3.00 course offered for no fee and no credit at our Peel Region full-time consecutive site at Applewood Heights C.I. in Mississauga. Classes at the Applewood Heights location are taught on Mondays at 4:00 pm on the following dates: Sept. 13, Sept. 20. Sept. 27, Oct. 4, Oct. 18, Oct. 25, Nov. 1, Nov. 29, Dec. 6, Jan. 10, Jan. 17, Jan.24. To enrol in this course, the Cat. # is R21N01. Classes on campus follow York University’s sessional dates.

Mandatory ED3 Quarter Courses
All P/J and J/I teacher candidates going into ED3 should select one section of the Science & Technology quarter course and the corresponding Health & Physical Education quarter course will be added to student records in August along with the matching 3-credit Arts & Social Studies course. Ineligible to Continue
Concurrent students are "ineligible to continue in the Faculty of Education" when the grade point average in the co-registered Faculty drops below 5.0 or a grade of less than C+ is received in any education course. Enrolment in the Faculty of Education will then be blocked and the practicum placement may be cancelled. If you have already enrolled in Education courses for Fall/Winter, you will automatically be de-enrolled. Final grades for summer courses will also be considered to determine if a teacher candidate is eligible to continue in Education for the Fall/Winter 2010-2011 session. If a teacher candidate has made arrangements to defer completion of any Education coursework or practicum placement from Fall/Winter 2009-2010 to Fall/Winter 2010-2011, they will not be permitted to continue into the next year of the Education program. This means a teacher candidate cannot complete ED2 practicum plus ED3 courses and ED3 practicum all in the same academic session.

Notes for Jewish Teacher Education
Students in Jewish Teacher Education should complete two Teaching Hebrew & Jewish Studies courses - HEB 2030 and 3030 prior to graduation. These courses are not counted towards the 30 credits for the BEd degree. Students should complete the form “Faculty of Education Transfer of Extraneous Education Courses” to ensure the credits for these two courses are linked to their home faculty. For students in the Jewish Teacher Education stream, there are two external courses that by petition can be considered to count as an Education elective – AS/HUMA 3825 The Holocaust in Cross-Cultural Context taught at York University through the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies and SPJE301 Voices of Israel taught at Hebrew University.

Extraneous Education Courses
To request that credits for an Education elective, HEB 2030/3030 or EDUC 3000 to be counted towards an undergraduate degree at York, teacher candidates should go to the Registrar's Office website at http://www.registrar.yorku.ca/services/forms.htm. Under the heading "Faculty of Education Forms", select "Faculty of Education Transfer of Extraneous Education Courses".

Practicum Seminars
ED2 and ED3 Teacher candidates do NOT enrol in the practicum seminar. The Faculty of Education will enrol everyone into the appropriate seminar once placements are finalized in August. Students will be grouped into practicum seminar tutorials based on the day of the week and geographic region. The course PRAC 4000 or PRAC 4000C or PRAC 4000G will appear on the student record. The seminar will occur on the same day as the practicum placement. Teacher candidates will be told their Seminar Leaders and which eight dates they will meet when they attend the mandatory orientation on September 7 at Keele. More details related to the September orientation session will be mailed with the practicum placement letters.

FW10 Practicum Placements
Official confirmation of what schools teacher candidates will be placed next year for their practicum will be mailed to home addresses in August. If information is not received by mid August, please call the Practicum Office. Depending on the number of teacher candidates a York-partnered school has agreed to host next year, the division and teachable requirements needed by teacher candidates, the board of education policy on how placements are determined, as well as the day of the week teacher candidates have requested for their placements, teacher candidates may receive one of their three choices of zone preference. Practicum-related inquiries should be directed to the Practicum Office at practicumoffice@edu.yorku.ca.
