Sessional Dates
Happy New Year as we welcome students to their return to classes for the winter 2012 term! The final date for Concurrent and Part-Time Consecutive BEd students to enrol in classes without instructors’ permission is January 16. For any requests to enrol in Education electives, please contact Teresa Boyle at tboyle@edu.yorku.ca. Please note there will be no classes and university offices will be closed on Monday, February 20, for Family Day. York University’s winter term Reading Week will occur February 18-24. The final date to drop a course without receiving a final grade is March 9. Education Career Fair
The annual Education Career Fair is scheduled for Thursday, January 12, 2012. School board personnel and international agency representatives will be present. This event is exclusively open to graduating teacher candidates. All ED3, Part-Time Consecutive and Full-Time Consecutive BEd graduating students will receive an invitation email with ticket information. Please print the ticket and bring your York student ID with you for on-site registration. Please check your Education email account and if you haven’t received your ticket, please contact Cindy Jung in our PreService Office. Cindy can be reached at CJung@edu.yorku.ca.

Mandatory Advising Sessions
All concurrent and part-time consecutive BEd teacher candidates who will be proceeding into ED2 and ED3 next September should attend a group advising session. The ED1 sessions for P/J are scheduled for Wednesday, February 22, at 9:00 am and Thursday, February 23, at 1:00 pm. The ED1 sessions for J/I are on Wednesday, February 22, at 10:00 am and Thursday February 23, at 2:00 pm. The ED1 sessions for I/S are Wednesday, February 22 at 11:00 am, Thursday February 23, at 3:00 pm, and Friday, February 24, at 2:00 pm. The ED2 sessions for P/J are Thursday, February 23, at 9:00 am and Friday, February 24, at 11:00 am. The ED2 sessions for J/I are Thursday, February 23, at 10:00 am and Friday, February 24, at 10:00 am. The ED2 sessions for I/S are Wednesday, February 22, at 2:00 pm, Thursday, February 23, at 11:00 am, and Friday, February 24, at 9:00 am. All above mentioned sessions occur in MC 157A. Teacher candidates in the Jewish Teacher Education program option should meet on Wednesday, February 29, at 10:30 am in the Winters Senior Common Room. The BEd (French) advising sessions will occur at Glendon on Wednesday, February 15, at 10:00 am for anyone in ED2 and 11:00 am for anyone in ED1 in Glendon Hall room 105. Ontario Tuition Grant
Starting January 2012 a new 30% off Ontario Tuition Grant is available for undergraduate students in first entry programs, it has been less than four years since you left high school, and your parents’ gross income is $160,000 or less. June Convocation
Graduating BEd students should view the information on the university’s convocation Web site for details regarding the ceremony and diploma services. Only Concurrent BEd students need to apply to graduate online using the convocation Web site. If any Full-Time or Part-Time Consecutive BEd students have already completed the online application, the information will be accepted; however, the Faculty of Education will mount the application to graduate for every consecutive student so it is not necessary for them to complete the application. The Faculty of Education convocation ceremonies will occur on June 15 at 10:30 am (full-time consecutive) and 3:30 pm (Deaf Education, part-time consecutive and concurrent BEd). Transcripts to OCT
Graduating BEd teacher candidates will need to make arrangements themselves to order all post-secondary transcripts to be sent to the Ontario College of Teachers. When ordering transcripts, please indicate that you wish for your York University transcript to be sent upon degree completion. Your transcripts must indicate your Bachelor of Education degree has been conferred. This means your transcripts should not be sent until after the June convocation. The Faculty of Education will only send your recommendation to OCT following convocation. Summer 2012: The ESL in Taiwan Program
York BEd 2011 graduating teacher candidates can acquire an ESL Part 1 AQ with an intermediate and secondary focus and the experience of teaching ESL for AYJGlobal in cooperation with the Toronto District School Board’s Continuing Education Department for 3 to 4 weeks in Taipei, Taiwan. Preparing to Teach Internationally
The new spring session of “Preparing to Teach Internationally”, a professional development course, is now open for registration. This course is available to university students inside and outside the Faculty of Education (York and non-York students), as well as teachers and principals. The course is taught on April 28, May 5, May 12, May 26 and June 2 (five-hour classes) on York’s Keele campus. The deadline to register is March 31, 2012. Summer Science Reminders
For Summer Science students who have already completed two summers and plan to graduate June 2012, a third summer with the Faculty of Education is required. A 20-day block in the month of May will need to be completed. Students should enroll themselves into PRAC 4000 Section M in the winter term(Cat # X75F01). If students have not yet satisfied the 9 credits for Education electives, they must enroll in Education electives for the winter 2012 term in order to graduate in June. Summer Science students who already completed one summer with the Faculty of Education, an online practicum form has been created. ED3 Quarter Courses for P/J and J/I
Classes for the WD term for winter term quarter courses to be taken by ED3 P/J and J/I Concurrent and Part-Time Consecutive teacher candidates began January 6 and end February 10. The WD term includes PRIJ 3031 section G taught by Catherine Little at Glendon on Fridays at 9:00 am in YH172, PRIJ 3032 section M taught by Lindsay Lamorre at Keele campus on Fridays 830 am in TM 316/upper gym, JICO 3021 section B taught by Catherine Little at Keele campus on Mondays at 8:30 am in YL 234, and JICO 3022 section A taught by Troy Fraser at Keele campus on Mondays 8:30 am in TM 316/upper gym. Please contact the instructor to confirm the meeting place for the first class if you are uncertain.

Awards and Bursaries
Each year, the University of Toronto chapter of Phi Delta Kappa International sponsors the Henry Jackman Award valued at $500 for an educator currently attending a Faculty of Education in the Greater Toronto area. A copy of a current student card, two signed original letters of education references, a resume and a 500-word essay is required. The essay should address the following topic - In Motion Leadership: The Skinny on Becoming Change Savvy (2010) , Michael Fullan states, “Capacity building concerns the knowledge, skills, and disposition of people individually but especially collectively. It is the group with shared purpose and skills that gets things done. (p.45)”. Consider a personal capacity building experience in education and reflect on the role of collaboration in contributing to your personal growth as an educator. Your response (approximately 500 words) should be mailed to Linda Massey, Ontario Principals’ Council, 180 Dundas Street West, 25th Floor, Toronto, Ontario, M5G 1Z8. An electronic submission is also required at lmassey@principals.ca. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2012. Learning Skills Services
Learning Skills Services offers a range of workshops related to time management, note-taking, learning style, academic writing, presentation skills and other academic development opportunities. In addition to their workshops at the Bennett Centre, they also offer workshops at the Scott Library in the Sound and Moving Image Library (SMIL) screening room 124. Or you can visit during their drop-in hours at the Learning Commons (2nd floor) every Tuesday and Thursday 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm beginning the week of January 9th. Practicum Reports
Fall term practicum reports for Full-Time Consecutive teacher candidates are not to be faxed/sent to the Practicum Office. It is the responsibility of the teacher candidate to get a copy of the report from the mentor teacher (York University is no longer keeping them on file). Reports should not be housed at a consecutive site for any longer than this school year.
