Last Reminder: Graduating this June
Collection of OCT registration numbers – Deadline June 1, 2014 All concurrent, full time and part time consecutive graduating students for June 2014 convocation should submit their Ontario College Teachers (OCT) registration number by June 1, 2014 to the Faculty of Education. The online form is available through the Faculty of Education SharePoint Site at edu.yorku.ca. Log into Student SharePoint, select Undergraduate, then select OCT Registration Number Submission. This will require logging into Passport York.
In order for the BEd Student Services Office to send your recommendation, we require the OCT registration number for each graduating teacher candidate. To apply for OCT membership visit: www.oct.ca, select Members and then Create an Account.
Please note; to be recommended to OCT Teacher Candidates must have paid off all debts to York University by mid June 2014.
Transcripts to OCT Graduating BEd teacher candidates will need to make arrangements themselves to order all post-secondary transcripts to be sent to the Ontario College of Teachers. When ordering transcripts, please indicate that you wish for your York University transcript to be sent upon degree completion. Your transcripts must indicate your Bachelor of Education degree has been conferred. This means your transcripts should not be sent until after the June convocation. The Faculty of Education will only send your recommendation to OCT following convocation. Ontario College of Teachers – Scholarship Program OCT offers awards to assist teacher candidates proceeding into their final year of a consecutive or concurrent teacher education program. Fall/Winter Elective Waitlist
Education students who are interested in taking electives but have not succeeded in enrolling will be able to complete the Elective Waitlist form. This form will be available in early July on the Sharepoint at https://sharepoint.edu.yorku.ca/sites/fedstudents/ug/default.aspx. You can find the link under forms. Please use your outlook email and password to access the Sharepoint link. You should try to enrol yourself in the course when your enrolment date occurs.
Concurrent Students – Education courses ED/EDUC 3310 The Adolescent and the Teacher - Not an elective course The Adolescent and the Teacher is not an elective course. It’s a required course for Intermediate/Senior teacher candidates and optional for Junior/Intermediate candidates as they can also enroll in ED/CMYR Human Development.
ED/EDUC 1000 Rethinking Schooling: A “Re-Introduction” – Not an elective course. This course is offered to students admitted to the Pre-Education BEd Concurrent program.
ED/EDUC 3760 Early and Family Literacy – Is offered to teacher candidates enrolled in the Primary/Junior teaching level. TC’s in the Intermediate/Senior level should not enroll in the course.
Summer Hours - Beginning June 6, 2014, the normal work day at York University will be reduced by one hour every Friday during the period from June to August 29, 2014 (Labour Day). Please be advised that the offices will be closed on July 1, 2014 (Canada Day) and August 4, 2014 (Civic Holiday).
Practicum Evaluations - All TCs should keep a copy of their final practicum reports in their personal files. Before the end of this academic year, TCs should ensure they have the reports from their mentor teachers. The Faculty of Education we will not be keeping these on file.
PRAC 4000 Enrolment - Concurrent and Part-time BEd teacher candidates cannot enrol in their practicum seminar PRAC 4000. Students will be enrolled into seminars which correspond with their placements once placements are finalized in August. All ED2 and ED3 teacher candidates will meet with their seminar leaders for the first time on September 2 , 2014 at the mandatory orientation.
Keele BEd Teacher candidates are required to keep EITHER Wednesday OR Thursday free of classes as this will be the teaching day. You do NOT need to inform the practicum office of this choice as your practicum section is not dependent upon which day you choose. Please note that once you have identified the teaching day it must remain consistent for both fall and winter terms.
Glendon BEd (French Immersion) Teacher Candidates are required to keep Wednesday free as the teaching day. There is no alternative day.
I/S Teaching Subjects - There is potential for conflicts or repetition in choosing similar teaching subjects, such as ones that fall under the business, computer studies or economics, geography, environmental science and science category. Although you may select these combinations, we would like to advise you that you may have the same course director and same course outline for both teaching subject classes. Some of the above subjects (e.g. business studies), depending on numbers, may only be available through independent study courses. When selecting your two teaching subjects, candidates should note the academic requirements for each subject and the prerequisites for curriculum and instruction courses. For the intermediate/senior program a minimum of 24 credits (four full university courses) in the subject area must be taken in order to register in the teaching subject curriculum and instruction course. A candidate requires a minimum of 36 credits (six full university courses) in one teaching subject area and 24 credits (four full university courses) in the other area to graduate.
