Orientation:
Concurrent & Part-Time Consecutive BEd - Tuesday, September 2, 2014 It is mandatory to attend the orientation. There will be guest speakers from the teachers' federations. The Orientation for concurrent and part-time consecutive students will occur on Tuesday, September 2, 2014.
ED 1 Teacher Candidates - All ED1 teacher candidates will meet in Curtis Lecture Hall “L” (CLH L) 9:00 am to 11:30 am. ED1 teacher candidates are also required to meet with their seminar/practicum leaders for CMYR 2100 from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm that day. Specific instructions regarding afternoon room locations will be given in the morning session. Students should come knowing the name of their Seminar Leader and Seminar Section.
ED 2 Teacher Candidates - All ED2 teacher candidates will meet in Vari Hall (VH) Rm A, from 9:00 am to 9:30 am and break out to two groups:
- P/J and J/I TCs AND all Catholic I/S TCs will remain in Vari Hall A from 9:30 – 11:00 for a Qualifications Evaluation Council of Ontario (QECO) session. Afternoon session from 1:30 – 3:30 will be held with your Practicum Facilitator. Check your EDU email for location.
- Public I/S TCs ONLY will move to Vari Hall C from 9:30 to 11:00 for an Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF) qualifications presentation. Afternoon session from 1:30 – 3:30 will be held with your Practicum Facilitator. Check your EDU email for location. Attendance is a must to receive and completethe OSSTF applicationprocess. Transcripts and other documentation may be submitted up to July1,2015 to the OSSTF CertificationDepartment. Application forms will be limited to ONE form per person. The form will include an embossed OSSTF/FEESO seal which cannot be duplicated. If you do not attend the OSSTF/FEESO presentation,you will not receive an application form. The application form is not posted on the OSSTF/FEESO website.
ED3 Teacher Candidates – All ED 3 will meet in Curtis Lecture Hall I (CLH I) from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm.
ED2 & ED3 Students are required to also meet with their practicum facilitators for PRAC4000C from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm that day. Specific instructions regarding afternoon room locations have been emailed to your EDU email with the Orientation Agenda. Students should come knowing the name of their Practicum Facilitator and Section.

New ED 1 and Consecutive Teacher Candidates will be receiving an email from the Office of Students Services the week of August 18th sharing information on their EDU email account.
Criminal Background Check
ALL Teacher Candidates are required to hold a valid Criminal Background Check prior to entering placement. This requirement is enforced by school boards who are safeguarding the children in their classrooms. There are NO EXCEPTIONS. NO valid Criminal Background Check means NO PLACEMENT.
Reminder about practicum placements for ED 2 AND ED 3 Concurrent BEd Teacher Candidates Practicum placement information will be posted mid-late August. To access the information, please log on to the Practicum System http://edu.yorku.ca/current-students/practicum/ using your Passport York username and password. Please do not call the practicum office to request this information. It is also important to note that changes to school enrollments and staffing that occur in August and early September may necessitate changes to fall placement location.
Religious Education: Teaching in Catholic Schools
Intended to introduce pre-service teacher candidates to professional practice and to extend knowledge and skills in the delivery of Ontario Catholic curriculum, this course answers the question, "What do I need to know to begin teaching in Ontario Catholic Schools?" Critical to the implementation of this course is the modeling of a positive learning environment that reflects care, professional knowledge, ethical practice, leadership and ongoing learning.
Who Should Attend
Any undergrad teacher candidate in the final year of education studies and interested in preparing to teach in Catholic schools.
NOTE: This course is open only to York University Faculty of Education undergraduate students. This course is not equivalent to the Religious Education, Part 1 additional qualification.
Course Format
- 36 hours in length; 10 hours online & 26 in-class
- Offered in the Fall and Winter sessions
- A Certificate of Completion is provided upon successful completion

Apply for Continuing Education Student Awards
Deadline October 15 Awards and bursaries are available to Faculty of Education Teacher Candidates to assist with the cost of university tuition. All Teacher Candidates who feel they meet the criteria of academic excellence and financial need are encouraged to apply. The deadline is October 15th and requires students to complete Student Financial Profile.
Please note that the awards may require the following:
- Specific to a teacher candidates York degree, teaching subjects and/or teaching level and year in the BEd program.
- a nomination letter from a Faculty of Education instructor and a Personal Statement submitted by the TC addressing teaching promise.

ED/EDUC 2200 3.00 Issues in Indigenous Education WINTER, Wednesdays 9:00-12:00 This course explores wide-ranging issues in Indigenous education. It is grounded in Indigenous understandings and practices of education. It explores the on-going impact of colonization, promotes decolonizing approaches by challenging deficit thinking and presents successful educational models with the possibility of practitioners integrating aspects of these methods into personal practice. NOTE: This course is mandatory for the Indigenous Teacher Education program option.
ED/EDUC 3600 3.00 Literacy and Culture WINTER 2:30-5:30
This course investigates how children become literate and addresses issues of second language learning and culture in literacy development. It will pursue successful practices for literacy development while exploring issues of diversity.
ED/EDUC 3720 3.00 Critical Thinking
FALL Thursdays 5:30 – 8:30 This course investigates philosophical inquiry, critical thinking, and curriculum. It explores questions about how the mind works, the nature of critical thought, and implications of these for curriculum and instruction. Relevant philosophical and theoretical traditions and perspectives will be considered.
ED/EDUC 3910 3.00 Reflecting on and Interpreting the International Experience FALL Thursday 2:30-5:30
(International Experience is Required Prior to Taking Course) This course is designed specifically for York University students whose undergraduate programme has included an international education experience. A wide range of theories in international and intercultural education, cross cultural psychology, internationalization, globalization and post colonial studies will provide a critical analytical framework to promote student reflection and interpretation of their international experiences. It will encourage students to integrate experiential learning into the theory and practice of their respective academic disciplines.
