ORIENTATION and PRACTICUM MEETINGS

New Consecutive and Concurrent BEd TC's
DATE: Tuesday, August 30, 2016
LOCATION: Accolade Centre East Rm 102   York map: http://www.yorku.ca/web/maps/.

TIME: Once you know your PRACTICUM SECTION and the name of your PRACTICUM FACILITATOR (visit the Practicum Information Management System and login with your Passport York credentials), view the list on the MTRR to see the time and room numbers.  IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU ATTEND THE SPECIFIED SESSION. Visit MTRR to see if you are scheduled for AM or PM Orientation/Group Presentation

Orientation time is being held by the teacher candidates practicum section vs division.   Due to the number of teacher candidates in attendance, we are holding an AM Orientation and a PM Orientation. Please attend with your PRACTICUM SECTION which is available on the York U. Mentoring and Teaching Resource Room (MTRR) at http://mtrr.blog.yorku.ca/year-one-orientation-aug-30/ Use your Passport York credentials and password to log in.

Consecutive ED 2 Practicum Meetings - September 7 from 12:00 to 2:00pm
Consecutive ED 2 TC's  Practicum Meeting will be held on campus Wednesday, September 7th 12:00 to  2:00 p.m. Please visit the MTRR website to find the location of your meeting (http://mtrr.blog.yorku.ca/year-two-practicum-section-meetings/). To view your practicum section, please log onto the Practicum website (https://practicum.edu.yorku.ca)  Reminder, ED 1 and ED 2 Consecutive and new Concurrent TC's  have access to view the FW 2016-17 program calendar for their  specific division.  The calendars are available on the Faculty of Education EDU website at http://edu.yorku.ca/program-calendars. 

Concurrent & Part-Time Consecutive ED 2 and 3
We are holding Orientation for Concurrent Teacher Candidates on September 7th from 2:30-4:30pm in Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Building (formerly Technology Enhanced Learning - TEL) Room 0001.  If you have note RSVP yet please follow the link below to complete your RSVP ASAP so we can make arrangements for your orientation.   The form can be found here:  https://eduforms.apps01.yorku.ca/machform/view.php?id=69915

ED 2 - Attendance is mandatory to provide key information for the upcoming year-long placement.
ED 3 - For ED3’s this is required for those returning from stop-out as there is new information and changes that you should be aware of. For those ED3’s who completed their ED2 year in 2015-16 this is an optional session since you have already completed ED2 and the ED3 year is structured similarly.  But you are welcome to attend if you would like a refresher.   Your RSVP to this event is important.  If you have not RSVP yet the last day is Friday, August 26th before 3:00pm.

Faculty of Education Email System
All new Faculty of Education Teacher Candidates have an education email. It’s your firstname_surname@edu.yorku.ca.   Your Faculty of Education email account is to be used for your professional email correspondence when taking classes to communicate with your instructors. There is a limit (quota) to the total space you are allowed to use (1Gb for most users). For reasons of efficiency you should try to keep your account tidy by deleting messages that you have read and moving messages you wish to keep out of your 'inbox'. The maximum size of an individual message that can be sent from or delivered is 25Mb.

Before you attempt to access your edu.yorku.ca account, it is important that you make sure that your email username and password are synced to Passport York. The following steps will sync your passwords before you login to your email account for the very first time.

  1. Log into Manage My Services: http://mms.yorku.ca/
  2. Enter your Passport York Username and Password and select the check box “Click this box before logging in to change your Passport York password.”
  3. Enter your current Passport York password and new Passport York password
  4. Click “Change Password”
  5. Logout
  6. Your Education email password will be synchronized in 30 minutes.
  7. To access your edu.yorku.ca email account, please visit https://webmail.edu.yorku.ca

Are You on the Official Classlist?
A teacher candidate will not receive a final grade for coursework if he/she is not listed on the official classlist. You should not attend classes for a section that is not the one listed on your student record. Because official classlists are used for submitting final grades, if you are listed on a classlist for one section but attending another, you will receive a failure grade because you did not submit assignments to the instructor for the section where your name appears on the classlist.

Criminal Background Check
All Teacher Candidates are required to hold a valid Criminal Background Check prior to entering placement.  This requirement is enforced by school boards who are safeguarding the children in their classrooms.  There are NO EXCEPTIONS.   NO valid Criminal Background Check means NO PLACEMENT.

Education elective available to BEd students!
Are you interested in completing one of your electives in a small, collaborative, seminar on LGBTQ issues in education? If so, you may want to participate in this 3.00 credit Student Collaborative Inquiry Course.  LGBTQ Sexuality and Gender in Schools With Dr. Jen Gilbert

This independent course will consider a range of issues related to LGBTQ issues in education. These may include: inclusion of LGBTQ topics in the curriculum; controversies about sex education; equity policies meant to protect LGBTQ students and teachers; intersections of sexuality and gender with race, class, ability, religion, etc..., experiences of LGBTQ youth; trans- students access to gender-appropriate washrooms and administrative justice; or, representations of LGBTQ sexuality and gender in children’s and young adult literature, for instance. Together, we will decide what topics and issues we want to study together.

The course will be structured in two parts. In the first part, we will run the class as a book club—we will come to our meetings having read a shared piece of research or literature to then discuss the shared text together. Assignments may include book reviews or short essays. In the second part of the class, together, we will organize a workshop, event, intervention, or panel for the Faculty that addresses a topic related to LGBTQ sexuality and gender.

The class will meet once a month for the whole year, with extra planning meetings around our event. First class is on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1:00-2:30PM, Winters 283B. At that meeting we will choose our meeting dates for the rest of the year and begin planning. Registration is limited- 4 spots remain. Apply for Continuing Education Student Awards Deadline October 15 – Student Financial Profile
Awards and bursaries are available to Faculty of Education Teacher Candidates to assist with the cost of university tuition. All Teacher Candidates who feel they meet the criteria of academic excellence and financial need are encouraged to apply. The deadline is October 15th and requires students to complete Student Financial Profile.

Awards may require the following:

  • Specific to a teacher candidates York degree, teaching subjects and/or teaching level and year in the BEd program.
  • A nomination letter from a Faculty of Education instructor and a Personal Statement submitted by the TC addressing teaching promise.

Please note for the following awards - Along with the October 15th  (SFP)  deadline  TCs also need to submit a  Personal/Written Statement and request a Recommendation Letter to be submitted directly to the Office of Student Services by November 1, 2016.   The submission forms will be available on Sharepoint the week of August 29th.  Visit: SharePoint/Undergraduate/Awards.

Jamison Family Award This award was established by the Jamison family to provide $500 to a deserving York University student with a preference given to a Faculty of Education student. All Faculty of Education students enrolled in practicum courses are eligible to apply. The Award is based on academic promise and financial need. One recommendation letter from a member of York University’s Faculty of Education who is familiar with applicant’s work is required. The letter must address academic promise.

The Learning Station.Com Canada Technology Award This award was established by the LearningStation.com, an Internet-based Canadian company. Concurrent Ed II and Ed III students enrolled in a practicum course and all Consecutive students are eligible to apply. Awards will be granted to a student who has demonstrated innovative ways to uses technology in a learning environment with lesser weight being given to financial need. One letter of recommendation from a Course Director who is familiar with the applicant's work is required. The letter must address the applicant's contribution towards innovative use of technology. Recipients must be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents, be Ontario residents and demonstrate financial need.

Mary Sue McCarthy Bursary This $500 award has been established by the Faculty of Education Alumni Association to honour Professor Mary Sue McCarthy, an outstanding educator and a founding member of the Faculty. All Faculty of Education students are eligible to apply. Awards will be decided based on academic promise and financial need. One recommendation letter from a member of York University’s Faculty of Education who is familiar with the applicant’s work is required. The letter must address teaching promise.

Patrick Solomon Memorial Award in Urban Diversity The Patrick Solomon Memorial Award in Urban Diversity will be available for two candidates in the Faculty of Education. One award will be available for students in each of the graduate and undergraduate programs. Recipients will demonstrate a dedication to the principles of social justice, equity and community service, as demonstrated through course assignments, projects and initiatives. Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons and residents of Ontario who demonstrate financial need.

Peter E. Board Bursary This small award was established by the Faculty of Education in memory of Professor Peter E. Board. All Faculty of Education students are eligible to apply. Applicants must show both financial need and academic promise. One recommendation letter from a member of York University’s Faculty of Education who is familiar with applicant’s work is required. The letter must address teaching promise.

Cornerstone Leadership Award in Action Graduating Student Award Established by Stephanie and Winston Ling, the Cornerstone Leadership in Action Awards will be presented annually to a student enrolled in their second year of the Faculty of Education's concurrent teacher education program and a student enrolled in the Faculty of Education's graduate program who has completed either the concurrent or consecutive teacher education program at York. One award will be available for students from each of these programs.

 The awards recognize students who have demonstrated exceptional leadership potential or ability and who embrace attributes such as honesty, integrity, passion, enthusiasm, innovation, creativity, humility and trustworthiness. Nominations will be accepted for students who embody the following:

    •  Has an exemplary reputation among peers, supervisors, faculty members and within relevant communities
    •  Employs innovative teaching practices
    •  Promotes a positive school culture
    •  Has the capacity to foster leadership qualities in others
    •  Works effectively with families and community members
    •  Supports the concept of mentorship, in relation to peers and students
    •  Believes in continuing professional education
    •  Has demonstrated standards of excellence in his/her professional activities Award recipients will be chosen from nominees who best embody the above qualities. Nominations will be accepted from faculty members or students.  In addition to the nominator’s letter (250-500 words); the nomination file should include a sample of the nominee’s work (with the nominee’s permission) which illustrates his/her qualification for the award.

Continuing Student Award – Access Candidates
Access identified candidates who demonstrate leadership in course work and practicum.   How have you mobilized your experiences as an access candidate to demonstrated leadership in your practicum and course work?
Amount:  $2500 x 3 awards
Application Requirements:   Nomination by faculty and self-nomination

  • Written Statement: Teacher Candidate is required to submit a written statement that shows how they have mobilized their experiences as an access candidate to demonstrated leadership in their practicum and course work?
  • Recommendation: Require one recommendation letter from a member of York University’s Faculty of Education who is familiar with the teacher candidate’s work.
  • To apply for the bursary students must complete Student Financial Profile <http://sfs.yorku.ca/aid/sfp>

Continuing Student Award – Community Work
Candidate who demonstrates financial need and commitment to community work – self-nomination. How has your community work influenced members of the community and your understanding of being an educator?
Amount: $1250.00 x 2 awards
Application Requirements:   Nomination by faculty and self-nomination

  • Written Statement: Teacher Candidate is required to submit a written statement that demonstrates how the community work has influences members of the community and their understanding of being an educator.

Continuing Student Award – Leadership
Candidates who demonstrate financial need and leadership in course work and practicum. How have you demonstrated leadership in your practicum and course work?
Amount:  $1000.00 x 3 awards

  • Written Statement: Teacher Candidate is required to submit a written statement that demonstrates leadership in their practicum and course work in the BEd program.
  • Recommendation: Require one recommendation letter from a member of York University’s Faculty of Education who is familiar with the teacher candidate’s work and practicum.

Religious Education: Teaching in Catholic Schools

Who should attend?  Any undergrad teacher candidate in the final year of the BEd  and interested in preparing to teach in Catholic schools.

Intended to introduce pre-service teacher candidates to professional practice and to extend knowledge and skills in the delivery of Ontario Catholic curriculum, this course answers the question, "What do I need to know to begin teaching in Ontario Catholic Schools?" Critical to the implementation of this course is the modeling of a positive learning environment that reflects care, professional knowledge, ethical practice, leadership and ongoing learning.
