His words are powerful and persuasive. They are creations that create listeners in the process of the telling. (p.78)

This session will feature a series of Digital Stories created by urban Indigenous students, parents and teachers. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion addressing issues in urban Indigenous Education.

Religious Diversity in the Classroom – November 30, 2017  (See Different) This session equips current teacher candidates and teachers with key knowledge and skills to be able to navigate the religious diversity in their classrooms, and helps them be better prepared to combat prejudice related to religious identities.

What is See Different? See Different is a national education initiative of the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion. See Different currently operates in 5 school boards across Ontario, training high school students in key diversity and inclusion leadership skills. We are now developing programming for teachers, so that educators are better prepared to build inclusive environments that support the diverse needs of their students.  Who should attend? Our sessions target high school teachers, including those who are currently being trained in a teacher education program or those who are already certified.  How can I register?  Participants must register by November 18, 2016 at  http://ccdi.ca/see-different-teacher-training-religious-diversity/ Registration will be capped on first-come, first-serve basis.  Our cap is 20 participants

Concurrent students can Specialize in International Education in their BEd degree! We are the first Faculty of Education in Ontario to offer this Specialization within the existing BEd degree program! Interested in finding out more details? Consecutive and Concurrent students: Complete a four-week placement in the spring in Kenya, Nicaragua or China! Some funding is available to students to help offset the cost. Applications will be available on November 15 and available through students Practicum Facilitator and must be submitted by Dec. 5th.

Education Resources: Education Resources are available to teacher candidates through the Education Resource Centre and York University Libraries. All teacher candidates are encouraged to check the ERC website as information is being updated daily: http://edu.yorku.ca/current-students/erc/. Materials that had been housed in the TEL building are being moved to the new locations below.

  • The ERC offers and maintains a collection of manipulatives, teaching guides and solution materials, and primary classroom technology. The ERC is located at 135 Winters College. Please note, the November hours for ERC are from 9:00 am to 2:00pm
  • The Scott Library provides access to over 10,000 titles of education books including: primary and secondary school texts, teacher practitioner materials and educational theory.       As well, the Sound and Moving Image Library (SMIL) located in the Scott Library and will be providing access to more than 100,000 CDs and DVDs, and 150,000 audio and video digital files (materials are still being organized for this library – expected to be available by mid October).   • The Frost Library located at York University’s Glendon campus will provide bilingual resources and services to support social science and humanities research and teaching (materials are expected to be available by mid November)

Are you on the Official Classlist? A teacher candidate will not receive a final grade for coursework if he/she is not listed on the official classlist. You should not attend classes for a section that is not the one listed on your student record. Because official classlists are used for submitting final grades, if you are listed on a classlist for one section but attending another, you will receive a failure grade because you did not submit assignments to the instructor for the section where your name appears on the classlist.

2017 BEd Graduates – Apply to Ontario College of Teachers for your Membership registration Teacher Candidates graduating in June 2017 will be applying to the Ontario College of Teachers to become a certified member. Application information is available at:  https://apps.oct.ca/OLR/Template.aspx?action=rege. In order for the BEd Student Services Office to send your recommendation we require the 6 digit OCT registration number for each graduating teacher candidate. To apply for OCT membership visit: www.oct.ca, select Members and then Create an Account.

Recommendation to OCT All Concurrent, Consecutive, Technological Education, and part time consecutive graduating students for June 2017 convocation should submit their Ontario College Teachers (OCT) registration number by June 1, 2017 to the Faculty of Education. The online form is available through the Faculty of Education SharePoint Site at edu.yorku.ca. Log into Student SharePoint, select Undergraduate, then select OCT Registration Number Submission. This will require logging into Passport York.

Religious Education: Teaching in Catholic Schools Who should attend?  Any undergrad teacher candidate in the final year of the BEd and interested in preparing to teach in Catholic schools.

Intended to introduce pre-service teacher candidates to professional practice and to extend knowledge and skills in the delivery of Ontario Catholic curriculum, this course answers the question, “What do I need to know to begin teaching in Ontario Catholic Schools?” Critical to the implementation of this course is the modeling of a positive learning environment that reflects care, professional knowledge, ethical practice, leadership and ongoing learning.
