Faculty of Education Office of Student Services team ~ available
The Office of Students Services teams will be available during regular office hours (10-4) to current and future students through email, phone and/or Zoom. Please email the Office of Students Services with your request or questions at osp@edu.yorku.ca. Please provide your name, York student number (if applicable) along with your phone number. Please give us 48 hours (during business days) to respond.
During this time all booked advising appointments - Tuesday and Thursdays will be done by phone or Zoom. A Faculty of Education Advisor will be emailing you a day before your appointment with advising plans.
REMINDER BEd Students heading into ED 2 FW 2020-21 ~ Select your Practicum Placement Location/Zone.
Students will log on to the Practicum Information Management System to select practicum preferences for the 2020-21 academic year. The online form is due March April 13, 2020. Students that do not submit a request for practicum for 2020-21, will not have a school placement come September. When student’s login to PIMs, they should click on Practicum Placement Preference and the window will open to make the request. Students that do not have the option “Practicum Placement Preferences” should email practicumoffice@edu.yorku.ca.
Year 1 Concurrent students who are returning to their home faculty do not need to complete a placement preference form now. You will be reminded to do so in March 2021.
My Online Services The following student services have introduced new online and mobile methods to deliver services and resources you need, including:
- Off-Campus Computing- Borrow a laptop if you don’t have one at home.
- Registrarial Services for current students - Please email rscheck@yorku.ca for your student service needs.
- Libraries- You can email, chat with a librarian during virtual reference hours, or use Ask a Librarian/Clavardez (Ontario Libraries including York). Check services hours online.
- The Writing Centre- Get online writing support through video chat as well as e-tutoring.
- Student Counselling & Development- Speak with a counselor for single session/crisis/emergency support call 416-736-5297. If the line is busy, please wait for a few minutes and call again.
- Career Centre- Career Lounge is open online. Virtual Appointments are available by phone at 416-136-5351 and by Skype.
- Academic Advising- Visit the Academic Advising website for online connections to your Academic Advisors.
- Student Accessibility Services- In-person appointments/intakes are being re-booked for phone, email or video call. Continue emailing your accessibility counsellor directly or email sasinfo@yorku.ca.
- Learning Skills Services- All courses have moved online and lots of new online learning resources have been added.
- The Centre for Sexual Violence Response, Support & Education (The Centre) The Centre will continue to provide services to community members through telephone 416-736-5211 and email thecentre@yorku.ca.
2020 BEd Graduates ~ Apply to the Ontario College of Teachers for your Membership registration
BEd students graduating in June 2020 will be applying to the Ontario College of Teachers to become a certified member. There are several steps students will need to do to ensure there are no delays nominating BEd graduates after convocation. Membership registration should be completed no later than June 1, 2020.
Students who are pursuing the BEd program through the Waaban Indigenous Education program or Ryerson BA/BEd and completing the program in July should begin their membership registration no later than mid-June.
MESSAGE from Ontario College of Teachers
UPDATE April 8_2020 IMPORTANT ordering transcript to OCT: Students are required to order their York U. transcript through OUAC (Ontario Universities' Application Centre) as the transcript is sent electronically versus a paper transcript. OCT staff are not in the building due to COVID - 19 and therefore can not receive and open mail, See step 4 for more information.
- Review the OCT application information at: https://apps.oct.ca/OLR/Template.aspx?action=rege
- Apply for OCT membership/registration:visit: oct.ca select Members and then Create an Account. In order for the BEd Student Services Office to send your recommendation, we require the six-digit OCT registration number for each graduating teacher candidate.
- Submit the six-digit Ontario College Teachers (OCT) registration number by June 1, 2020 to the Faculty of Education. The online form is available on the Faculty of Education website. Select Current Students, Undergraduate, Convocation, then select OCT Registration Number. This will require logging into Passport York.
- Send Transcripts to OCT~ Graduating BEd teacher candidates will need to to order all post-secondary transcripts to be sent to the Ontario College of Teachers. When ordering transcripts, please indicate that you wish for your York University transcript to be sent upon degree completion. Your transcripts must indicate your Bachelor of Education degree has been completed. This means your transcripts should not be sent until after all grades are submitted and noted on your record Program Complete. During COVID - 19 OCT as advised to order the transcript through OUAC as they send it electronically to OCT vs paper https://www.ouac.on.ca/apply/oct/en_CA/user/login
- Recommendation to OCT The Faculty of Education will only send your recommendation to OCT following convocation. Transcripts ordered by the student and the recommendation sent by the Faculty of Education are required for certification.

Education electives taught in spring/summer will be offered remotely or/and online. The courses may begin a week later than originally planned. See below. We ask students enrol in one elective only. Concurrent BEd students should not enrol in an ED elective for their undergraduate program.

The Students Services team will be working on the Yr 2 BEd Advising/Enrollment packages for FW 2020. Once the packages are complete, they will be sent by email to all students returning and continuing in the BEd program this September. Included in the package will be the course schedule, Monday - Friday class schedule, F/W ED elective choices, ED 2 Practicum meetings, reminder to re apply for Police Record Check/VSS and any important dates for FW 2020 academic year. Plans are to have the packages ready by mid May or earlier.
BA Educational Studies students
ED/EDST 3999 Experiential Education: Students should plan to enroll in ED/EDST 3999 6.0 Experience, Inquire and Contribute (EIC) after completing a minimum 54.00 credits. Students will have two Experiential Education placements (yr. 3 and yr. 4). The EIC offers learning placements within the community or in related organizations as part of the Bachelor of Arts in Educational Studies program. The placements are workplace-based learning to put theory to practice in the field of learning and education. As a student of our Educational Studies program, you’ll develop workplace-specific skills and enhance your professional networks – all while completing your degree.
ED/EDST 3999 and 4999 are required courses (seminars and community placement) for the program. Students will enrol in the course in June (students enrolment window date) and end of June/early July the Faculty of Education, Practicum Office will email students with steps to select a Community Placement. Note, that EDST 3999 is a prerequisite for 4999.

OSSTF/FEESO Faculty of Education Award 2020
Deadline: April 15, 2020 Please note: The selection of the award recipients of the OSSTF/FEESO Faculty of Education Award is done by OSSTF. The applications/nomination are sent directly to OSSTF. Teacher Candidates must apply for the award using the OSSTF/FEESO application form.
The OSSTF/FEESO Faculty of Education Award, valued at $1,000 annually, shall be awarded to one graduating Intermediate/Senior or Technological Education Teacher Candidate at each English-language publicly assisted Ontario faculty of education who applies for the award and who in the opinion of the OSSTF/FEESO Provincial Executive has shown a clear understanding and empathy for the values of unionism, is attempting to secure a job with a public secondary board, and best exemplifies the criteria.
