REMINDER Select your Practicum Placement Location/Zone ~ BEd Students heading into ED 2 FW 2022-23 -  DEADLINE April 14, 2022. 

ALL returning BEd students must select their Practicum Placement Location/Zone Choice for the 2022-2023 academic year. Students will log on to the Practicum Information Management System to select practicum placement (location/zone) preferences. The online form will be available starting Monday, March 7, 2022 and is due Thursday, April 14, 2022. Students who do not submit a request for practicum for 2022-23 will not have a school placement come September 2022.  When students log in to PIMs, they should click on Practicum Placement Preference and the window will open to make the request.  Students that do not have the option “Practicum Placement Preferences” should email practicumoffice@edu.yorku.ca.

Bachelor of Education Teaching Certification It's important to remember that the BEd is a full-time academic program that has a very full schedule, and the degree is accredited as an in-person program; with the professional nature of the program and expectations from the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT), it is also expected that students attend classes together in order to enrich their learning experiences and to prepare them to enter the teaching profession.

A friendly reminder that Course Evaluations are now open for your Winter (W) term courses and Year (Y) courses. You can find the evaluations online at https://courseevaluations.yorku.ca (and log in at the button)

2022 BEd Graduates ~ Apply to the Ontario College of Teachers for your Membership registration
BEd students graduating in June 2022 will be applying to the Ontario College of Teachers to become a certified member. There are several steps students will need to do to ensure there are no delays nominating BEd graduates.

  1. Review the OCT application information at  https://apps.oct.ca/OLR/Template.aspx?action=rege
  2. Apply for OCT membership/registration: Visit: www.oct.ca select Members and then Create an Account. In order for the BEd Student Services Office to send your recommendation, we require the six-digit OCT registration number for each graduating teacher candidate.
  3. Submit the six-digit Ontario College Teachers (OCT) registration number by June 1, 2022, to the Faculty of Education. The online form is available on the Faculty of Education website.
  4. Apply to graduate (degree audit review):   Only Concurrent BEd students’  need to apply to graduate online using the convocation website at  http://www.yorku.ca/mygrad/preparing/apply  Deadline was March 1, 2022.  Please note, Concurrent BEd students may only see their Bachelor of Education record when they requested to graduate.  These students also needed to submit a request for degree audit of their undergraduate program.  The form to submit the request is https://registrar.yorku.ca/graduation/apply/forms . Students in the Consecutive BEd model will be automatically reviewed for degree completion.
  5. Send Transcripts to OCT ~ Graduating BEd teacher candidates will need to order all post-secondary transcripts and be sent to the Ontario College of Teachers. When ordering transcripts, please indicate that you wish for your York University transcript to be sent upon degree completion. Please order your transcript while completing your OCT application, using the OUAC Transcript Request available at https://www.ouac.on.ca/apply/oct/en_CA/user/login
  6. Recommendation to OCT - The Faculty of Education will only send your recommendation to OCT following degree(s) completion. Transcripts ordered by the student and the recommendation sent by the Faculty of Education are required for certification.

June Convocation
Graduating BEd and BA students should view the information on the university’s convocation Web site for details regarding the ceremony and diploma services. All students planned to graduate need to register for the ceremony. Spring convocation dates and registering for the ceremony will be posted here: https://www.yorku.ca/convocation/

Students in the Waaban Indigenous BEd and the Ryerson ECS/BA BEd programs will be receiving information from Faculty of Education, Student Services,  Academic  Advisor, Jane Larsson who will be looking course enrolment for the spring/summer session.  Enrolment will be completed by March 31, 2022.

Bachelor of Education (BEd) course requirements
Students needing to double check the course requirements for the BEd program should visit YU Academic Calendar's.  Courses and Practicum requirements for all the teaching panels are posted. Visit https://calendars.students.yorku.ca/2020-2021/programs/ED/education#course-requirements-and-specializations and select Faculty Rules and then Course Requirements and Specializations.

Advising packages for BEd yr.  2 (Semester 3 ad 4) 2022-23
The Students Services team will be working on the Yr. 2  Advising/Enrollment packages for FW 2022.   Once the packages are complete, they will be sent by email to all students returning and continuing in the BEd program this September.  Included in the package will be the course schedule, Monday - Friday class schedule, Winter  ED elective choices, ED 2 Practicum meetings, reminder to reapply for Police Record Check/VSS and any important dates for FW 2022 academic year.  Plan to have the packages ready by mid-May.

Education elective courses for the BEd

  • Primary/Junior candidates must complete three elective courses - one Math based, one Literacy based and one open choice to satisfy their BEd degree requirements.
  • Junior/Intermediate candidates must complete a total of two elective courses - one Math or Literacy based and one open choice to satisfy their BEd degree requirements.
  • Intermediate/Senior and Technological Education candidates must complete a total of three elective courses to satisfy their BEd degree requirements.
  • Glendon FSL BEd – PJ and JI one Math elective and IS one open elective

Summer enrolment windows
All Bachelor of Education (BEd) and BA Educational Studies students continuing for FW 2022-23 will be given a summer enrollment window to enroll in courses. Summer enrolment windows are planned in April.  Please note; BEd students may see an earlier enrolment window date but the ED/EDUC courses will not open for enrolment until April 13th and 14th. BEd  students who have/had an enrolment window in late April will be changed to April  13th or 14th.

BEd students, moving into Year 2 will have access to enroll in summer courses "ED/EDUC electives".  Although not mandatory, we strongly suggest students heading into Year 2 for FW 2022 plan one education elective in the summer in order to “lighten” your course load during the winter term. Please note,  ED/EDUC summer courses are being offered ONLINE or REMOTE and same for winter 2023, EDUC electives will continue to be offered  ONLINE or REMOTE.  

April 13th  - PJ and JI  students enroll in Math or Literacy elective and Glendon FSL PJ & JI Math elective.

April 14th -  IS/TECH ED students enroll in OPEN EDUC elective and PJ and JI enroll in OPEN elective or Math-Literacy.

Please visit ‘My Online Services’ website at My Online Services | My Online Services | York University and click on Enrolment Windows under ‘Mange My Enrolment & Courses’. You will then need to log in using your Passport York to be taken to your Student Web Services portal. From here, you will click on the tab labeled ‘My Enrolment Access Times’ and you will see the day and time you can begin enrolling in Summer 2022 courses.

Search Course Timetables: https://w2prod.sis.yorku.ca/Apps/WebObjects/cdm to see the summer course offerings and the catalogue number for the course you are wishing to enroll in.   The following ED/EDUC electives are being planned for summer session.

BA Educational Studies students enrolling in EDST 4999 FW 2022-23
BA students who have successfully completed EDST 3999 6.0 and moving into level 4 (last year of studies in the BA program) should be planning to enrol in EDST 4999 6.0 FW 2022-23.  The Office of Students Services will plan information sessions to share plans for EDST 4999 6.00. Dates for the online zoom sessions will be posted in the May newsletter and planned for early June.

BA Educational Studies students - Information Sessions Level 2 and 3 
The Office of Students Services will be providing information sessions via Zoom to students moving into level 2 and 3 (level 2 =  30 credits and level 3 = 54 credits complete by end of summer) this September. The sessions will be planned for the month of June and will discuss courses planned for FW 2022-23, program requirements, how to review your Degree Progress Report, and for those students who will have completed a minimum of 54 credits by August 2022, enroll in EDST 3999 - Experience, Inquire and Contribute (EIC).  The EIC offers learning placements within the community or in related organizations as part of the Bachelor of Arts in Educational Studies program. The placements are workplace-based learning to put theory to practice in the field of learning and education    The information session dates/times will be sent by email the first week of June.

The Dean Ron Owston Award will be granted annually to one student enrolled in the BA Educational Studies Program and one student in the Master of Leadership and Community Engagement in the Faculty of Education with an award valued at $500.00 each. The awards will be granted to domestic or international students who, during their first year have a minimum 7.5 or A average and demonstrate financial need. The undergraduate award will be adjudicated by the Faculty of Education awards committee and the graduate award will be adjudicated by the Graduate Program in the Faculty of Education.

To apply for the award Dean Ron Owston Award BA Educational Studies students must submit a personal statement addressing their interest in the award and their financial need.  Deadline date May 1, 2022.
