We are seeking volunteers for the Faculty of Education Summer Institute (FESI).

This year FESI will be held in-person at York on Thursday, August 24, 2023, from 8:30am - 4:30pm, and we are looking for volunteers who are able to support us on the day of the event for half of the day or the full day.

Some more details:

  • We will be having an in-person training at York on Wednesday, August 9 from 1-3pm.
  • For your time, volunteers will receive: a $25 gift certificate, free breakfast and lunch at the event, and the opportunity to attend the sessions.
  • If you are interested in volunteering, please email fesi@edu.yorku.ca and we will provide you with more information!

Bachelor of Education (BEd) course requirements
Students needing to double check the course requirements for the BEd program should visit YU Academic Calendar's.  Courses and Practicum requirements for all the teaching panels are posted. Visit https://calendars.students.yorku.ca/academic-calendar#/programs

Grade requirements for the Bachelor of Education

  • Students will be ineligible to continue in the Bachelor of Education teaching certification degree / program if they receive less than a grade of C+ in any course taken for education credit.
  • In the Bachelor of Education (BEd) program, students complete both a community-based practicum placement and three school-based practicum placements. School placements are supervised by an Ontario Certified Teacher. Students are required to complete all practicum days successfully in order to complete their degree programs. Further details on the practicum experiencecan be found online.

BEd year 2 Enrolment

  • Year 2 BEd Advising/Enrollment packages are posted here: https://www.yorku.ca/edu/students/undergraduate-programs/bed-program-calendars/
  • The Faculty of Education Students Services team have enrolled Year 2 BEd students in the required courses for FW 2023-24. If students have not enrolled in EDPR 3000 and EDPR 4000 then the Student Services team can not complete the remaining enrolment of courses.
  • Year 2 Education electives The Students Services Office will be working on more ED electives (seats) for students moving into year 2. The education electives are a winter offering and an email will be sent when the course are posted and open for enrolment.
  • YEAR TWO BEd – ED Electives
    Maximum numbers of electives required to be completed for the BEd:

    • Primary/Juniorcandidates must complete three elective courses - one math based, one language/literacy based and one open choice to satisfy their BEd degree requirements.
    • Junior/Intermediate candidates must complete a total of two elective courses - one Math orLiteracy based and one open choice to satisfy their BEd degree requirements.
    • Intermediate/Seniorand Technological Education candidates must complete a total of three elective courses to satisfy their BEd degree requirements.
    • Glendon FSL BEd –  PJ and JI one Math elective and IS one open elective
  • Reminder Police record/VSS for FW 2023-24 In School Placement is required and TCs  should have it no later than September 1.

BA EDST Program requirements
Students pursuing the BA Educational Studies program should look at the  Degree Progress Report, to keep track of courses completed and what may still be required.  For the degree Academic regulations and requirements visit Academic Calendars at https://calendars.students.yorku.ca/

  • BA Educational Studies students moving from year 1 to 2   The Office of Students Services hosted a virtual information session in March inviting year one BA students moving into year two (level one to level two) an overview of the BA EDST course requirements, and Degree Progress Report   One of the sessions were recorded https://youtu.be/bofzcoH_sS0
  • BA Educational Studies students moving into level 3 and 4     The Office of Students Services held two  two virtual information sessions for BA students moving into level 3 and 4 (level 3  =  54 to 82 credits and level 4 = 84 credits or more completed by end of summer) this September. We discussed courses planned for FW 2023-24, program requirements, how to review your Degree Progress Report, and the EDST 3999 and EDST 4999 - Experience, Inquire and Contribute (EIC) options.  The EIC offers learning placements within the community or in related organizations as part of the Bachelor of Arts in Educational Studies program. Apply for Student Awards and Bursaries
Deadline September 15 – Student Financial Profile
Awards and bursaries are available to Faculty of Education Teacher Candidates and BA EDST students  to assist with the cost of university tuition.  If you fee you meet the criteria of academic excellence and financial need you are encouraged to apply. The deadline is September 15th  and requires students to complete Student Financial Profile.

The OCT Scholarship Program / Le Programme de bourses de l'OrdreThe Ontario College of Teachers’ Scholarship Program supports and sustains excellence in the teaching profession by reinforcing high standards and professional competence. College scholarships reward the achievements and characteristics of teacher candidates who model the ethical and professional standards, including care, trust, respect and integrity.

We are pleased to inform you that our 2023 scholarship application process is now open. Teacher candidates in an Ontario consecutive or concurrent teacher education program who will graduate in 2024 are eligible to apply for up to two of four scholarships of $1,500 each:

  • The Joseph W. Atkinson Scholarshiprecognizes a candidate who demonstrates both outstanding academic achievement and experience that reflects a high level of preparedness for teacher education.
  • The Brian P. McGowan Scholarship for Resilience, named in honour of the College’s fourth registrar, recognizes a candidate who demonstrates resilience and tenacity in the face of adversity.
  • The Ontario College of Teachers Primary/Junior or Junior/Intermediate Scholarshipand the Ontario College of Teachers Intermediate/Senior Scholarshiprecognize candidates on a holistic basis that considers extracurricular activities and background experiences.

While applicants may apply for two scholarships, they can be awarded only one of them -such that four individual recipients are recognized. More information about the scholarship program and how to apply can be found on our website. The deadline for applying is August 31, 2023, at 5 p.m.

The Faculty of Education, Office of Student Services staff are available for walk  inquiries on campus and online advising support . We are in 128 Winters College, Office hours are (Monday - Thursday = 9:00am to 4:00pm and Fridays month of June, July and August  9:00am to 3:00pm).
