York U Faculty of Education and the Jean Augustine Chair are co-hosting a Film Screening of Steadfast - November 2, 2023
The Faculty of Education and Jean Augustine Chair in Education, Community & Diaspora cordially invite you to join us for a film screening of STEADFAST: The Message and The Messenger – The Story of Jean Augustine’s journey from Happy Hill, Grenada to being the first Black woman elected to Canada’s House of Commons and the first Black woman to serve in Canada’s federal Cabinet.
The Honourable Dr. Jean Augustine is a Canadian icon whose legacy has made a lasting impact on society. In the highly anticipated documentary film “Steadfast – The Messenger and the Message” directed by Fahim Hamid Ali, you will witness the unwavering determination of a trailblazing federal level politician, social activist, and educator.
Through captivating enactments and firsthand accounts, the film captures Dr. Augustine’s journey from her humble beginnings in Grenada, West Indies, to her numerous achievements and accolades after immigrating to Canada in 1960. Her life is a testament to the power of perseverance, courage, and the unwavering commitment to fighting for the rights of women, African-Canadians, and the socially disadvantaged.

Ontario College of Teachers Transitional Certificate
In August 2023, the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) approved a Transitional Certificate for students in the Bachelor of Education Program (BEd).
Information from the Ontario College of Teachers:

- The Faculty of Education cannot advise on the completion of this process. Questions should be directed to the OCT.
Requirements for eligibility for BEd students at York University:
- Students must be in good standing and in their fourth semester (January 2024) of the BEd program.
- Students must have completed more than 40 days of their practicum.
- Students must have successfully completed a minimum of 30 post-secondary credits.
- Students must have completed the Faculty of Education Transitional Teaching Certificate form request form for the Faculty of Education by the deadline of December 1, 2023.
- Students who miss the deadline will not have their applications processed.
Students who do not receive a Transitional Certificate can wait until the completion of their Bachelor of Education program and will be able to apply for the Certificate of Qualification and Registration, which is not transitional.
Concurrent BEd students must already have completed an undergraduate degree. Concurrent students without a completed undergraduate degree can apply for June 2024 convocation if their undergraduate degree audit for convocation is complete and their transcript shows "Program Complete”. The deadline to submit the application to graduate is November 15, 2023. Concurrent students may only see their Bachelor of Education record when requesting to graduate. Concurrent students must complete the "Application to Graduate with an Undergraduate Degree” form and email to degaud@yorku.ca by November 15, 2023. If Concurrent students have already applied for a degree audit, they will receive notification via email from the Registrar’s Office to indicate that the process is complete. Concurrent students can also visit YU Verify - Degree Verification to check their status. It will take some time for your request to be processed.
Bachelor of Education students should be aware of the following:
- The OCT has indicated that “Registration requirements may change without notice.”
- BEd students are responsible for completing their own paperwork and ensuring that their memberships are in good standing with the OCT. This includes ordering both undergraduate and Bachelor of Education transcript(s)
- Application alone does not guarantee that the Faculty of Education will recommend a student for the Transitional Certificate.
- When a student obtains a Transitional Certificate, they are subject to all OCT professional standards.

HLST 4170 3.0 Experience Cuba: Enacting the Human Right to Health & Health Equity (This course can meet an OPEN elective for the Bachelor of Education program)
- Destination: Cuba
- Duration: April 27th to May 11th
- Spend 2 weeks exploring key areas of the right to health, education, art, history, and culture and ways that Cuba has built their social fabric in a way that delivers exceedingly high health outcomes, rooted in a health equity approach.

- Destination: Philippines
- Duration: May 26th – June 15th, 2024
- In this summer abroad course, we explore the complexity of the colonial history, geographical make up and postcolonial predicament of Philippine culture. Through the dances that will be taught, this course will embody the wide array of cultural and historical influences that have defined the Philippines and its diaspora today.

CUSMA (NAFTA 2.0) Field Course: Free Trade, Unfree Labour and Environmental Justice in Continental North America
- Destination: Mexico
- Duration: June 2nd – June 8th, 2024
- This course introduces students to the practical implications of a continental free trade through immersive experiences in Southern Ontario and Central Mexico. Students taking part will be enrolled at either York University or the National Autonomous University of Mexico. The course will explore how the agreement is related to, and affects, environmental justice broadly conceived: Thematic topics of interest will include food and agriculture; energy, extractives, and infrastructure; migration and labour regimes. Across these examples the course will centre upon the overarching themes of gender, financial investment, Indigenous rights, and social movements for racial and environmental justice.

- This course introduces students to the contemporary perspectives of the Italian language and includes a practical component in Italy. Through this, students can explore the historical, social, and political aspects that have contributed to the formation of modern-day Italian.

GL/POLS 4400 6.0: The Netherlands and Europeanization
- Destination: Netherlands
- Duration: 2 – 3 weeks between June to July
- Interested in European politics and policies? This intensive summer course fosters an understanding of political, social, and economic transformations in the European Union (EU) by focusing on one of the original six member states, the Netherlands. Through readings, lectures, meetings with policymakers and experts, and study tours of Dutch and EU institutions, this course takes a ground-level perspective on Europeanization from The Hague, Brussels, Nijmegen, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam. Students will also visit museums and take course field trips to Leiden, Luxembourg, the Groesbeek Canadian war cemetery, and elsewhere.

Religious Education: Teaching in Catholic Schools - Who Should Attend
Any undergrad BEd student in the final year (yr 2 ) of BEd and interested in preparing to teach in Catholic schools. NOTE: This course is open only to York University Faculty of Education undergraduate students. This course is not equivalent to the Religious Education, Part 1 additional qualification.

Thinking a head for June 2024 graduation - BEd students https://www.yorku.ca/convocation/
Graduating Bachelor of Education students for spring 2024 can apply for their OCT registration/membership now. However, the full nomination to the Ontario College of Teachers by the Faculty of Education will not be submitted until late May 2024 when final grades and practicum days are completed successfully.
See the following steps to be familiar with what's required.

- Review the OCT application information at https://apps.oct.ca/OLR/Template.aspx?action=rege
- Apply for OCT membership/registration: Visit: www.oct.ca select Members and then Create an Account. In order for the BEd Student Services Office to send your recommendation, we require the six-digit OCT registration number for each graduating teacher candidate.
- Submit the six-digit Ontario College Teachers (OCT) registration number by to the Faculty of Education. The online form is available on the Faculty of Education website.
- Send Transcripts to OCT ~ Graduating BEd teacher candidates will need to order all post-secondary transcripts and be sent to the Ontario College of Teachers. The Faculty of Education can not order students transcripts, its the responsibility of students. When ordering transcripts, please indicate that you wish for your York University transcript to be sent after degree completion. Please order your transcript while completing your OCT application, using the OUAC Transcript Request available at https://www.ouac.on.ca/apply/oct/en_CA/user/login
- Recommendation to OCT - The Faculty of Education will send your recommendation to OCT following program completed recorded on the student record and if you have shared your OCT number (step 3). Transcripts ordered by the student and the recommendation sent by the Faculty of Education are required for certification.

Grade Requirements Bachelor of Education
- Students will be ineligible to continue in the BEd degree program if they receive less than a grade of C+ in any course taken for education credit.
- In the Bachelor of Education (BEd) program, students complete both a community-based practicum placement and three school-based practicum placements. School placements are supervised by an Ontario Certified Teacher. Students are required to complete all practicum days successfully in order to complete their degree programs. Further details on the practicum experience can be found online.

Students come to SCD because of a wide range of concerns including, but not limited to: depression, anxiety, abuse, stress, self-esteem, relationship issues, eating and body image as well as issues related to sexuality, short-term individual, couple, and group counselling, crisis intervention and consultations regarding students in distress/crisis and issues related to overall mental health.
