The Jean Augustine Chair in Education, Community and Diaspora in the Faculty of Education at York University and Unifor are pleased to present their annual Black History Month Celebration.

Word, Sound, Power: Black Artistic Expression will be an evening of spectacular performances showcasing Black artistic expression here at York University! Featuring musical performances including the R&B Ensemble under the direction of Mike Cado and the York University Gospel Choir under the direction of Karen Burke, as well as Spoken Word artists from Griots to Emcees.

Mathematics Proficiency Test Resource Hub - Year 2 BEd students only
The Mathematics Proficiency Test Resource Hub, developed by Professional Learning, is your go-to for the math content and pedagogy resources you’ll need for the MPT.  Peer Learning sessions, organized by FESA, are available for registration through the Resource Hub.

The Hub will:

  • Provide up-to-date information about the Test as released by MoE/OCT/EQAO
  • Provide curated learning resources that correlate with math concepts and math pedagogy
  • Allow you to assess your knowledge and understanding and create a personal learning pathway
  • Allow you to access and navigate resources based on your individual needs

COSTA RICA ~ plan a summer course  in Las Nubes
Are you interested in taking an Education course in Las Nubes, Costa Rica in the summer?  We are holding a couple of information sessions for people who might be interested in taking the education course, Education for a Sustainable Future (EDUC 3700/5900), in Las Nubes, Costa Rica. This is part of the semester abroad program at York university’s EcoCampus.  The course takes place from May 23rd to June 1st 2020. There are other courses throughout the summer that you might consider as well. Education Graduate Students and Undergraduate Students (3rd & 4th year students in the B.Ed and BA [Educational Studies] programs) are able to take the course for program credit.  The course has no prerequisites. It is an excellent opportunity for educational students as it includes visits to diverse ecologies (rain forests, mountains and beaches) and local schools in the Alexander Skutch Biological Corridor and in Bribri and Boruca indigenous communities. It is a really fantastic experience.

Some funding is available to support additional travel and course expenses through York International.  The information sessions are scheduled for:

  • Monday, February 3rd, in Winters College 283B at 4:30 pm
  • Thursday, February 6th in HNES 141 at 11:30 am.

Undergraduate Teaching Award nominations
The Undergraduate Teaching Award is awarded to a member of the Faculty of Education who has displayed substantial, significant and sustained excellence, commitment and enthusiasm to the multifaceted aspects of teaching and learning. The nominee may be a full-time tenured faculty member, tenure-stream, contract faculty, seconded, or adjunct faculty, and must have taught at York for at least one year. Professional Development for EDST 3999 6.0 
Experience, Inquire, Contribute I (EIC): Systematic Observation in Context
BA Educational Studies students who will be heading into Year  3 for FW 2020-21 will be required to attend one of the sessions on Professional Development to support the course/community practicum of EDST 3999 6.0 .   Sessions will be held in mid to late  April. Students need to attend one of the planned sessions.  The sessions are approx. 2.5 hours.   More information will be sent by email to the BA EDST students in March 2020.

Summer enrollment windows Summer  2020
All BEd and BA Educational Studies students continuing to FW 2020-21  have been given a summer enrollment window to enroll in courses. Please check you student record to see the first date for summer enrolment.   Concurrent BEd students who have just completed ED 1 and are heading back to their undergraduate program for FW 2020 will have a summer enrollment for both their undergraduate and BEd program.

Planning summer 2020 Education Electives
The Faculty of Education offers a few education summer electives for the students in the BEd to enrol in.  Planning to offer in May and June the following courses.  The courses are taught online, blended  or lecture.  Students in the Concurrent BEd Year 1  can also enrol in an elective(s) summer 2021.

2020  BEd Graduates  ~ Apply to the Ontario College of Teachers for your Membership registration
BEd students graduating in June 2020 will be applying to the Ontario College of Teachers to become a certified member. There are several steps students will need to do to ensure there are no delays nominating BEd graduates after convocation.

  1. Review the OCT application information at: https://apps.oct.ca/OLR/Template.aspx?action=rege
  2. Apply for OCT membership/registration: visit: www.oct.ca select Members and then Create an Account. In order for the BEd Student Services Office to send your recommendation, we require the six-digit OCT registration number for each graduating teacher candidate.
  3. Submit the six-digit Ontario College Teachers (OCT) registration number by June 1, 2020 to the Faculty of Education. The online form is available on the Faculty of Education website. Select Current StudentsUndergraduateConvocation then select OCT Registration Number. This will require logging into Passport York.
  4. Send Transcripts to OCT ~ Graduating BEd teacher candidates will need to decide themselves to order all post-secondary transcripts to be sent to the Ontario College of Teachers. When ordering transcripts, please indicate that you wish for your York University transcript to be sent upon degree completion. Your transcripts must indicate your Bachelor of Education degree has been conferred. This means your transcripts should not be sent until after the June convocation. It’s recommended to order the transcript through OUAC as they send it electronically to OCT vs paper https://www.ouac.on.ca/apply/oct/en_CA/user/login
  5. Recommendation to OCT - The Faculty of Education will only send your recommendation to OCT following convocation. Transcripts ordered by the student and the recommendation sent by the Faculty of Education are required for certification.

June Convocation
Graduating BEd students should view the information on the university’s convocation Web site for details regarding the ceremony and diploma services. Only Concurrent BEd students need to apply to graduate online using the convocation Website at   http://www.yorku.ca/mygrad/preparing/apply  Deadline to apply is February 28, 2020

Please remember if you change your residential address or phone number(s) you should update this information through the Registrar's Office website. Under My Student Records select Change My Profile. You are also encouraged to add a contact person in case of emergency.

Please note that classroom space is shared, and we want to remind all students/faculty if eating in the classrooms to please remove garbage and put it in the appropriate receptacles in the hallways.  By doing our part, we will help to keep our classrooms clean and in a professional state.
