This FW 2021-22  there  will three IEC options to select from.  Students will enroll in the section of ED/EDST 3999 6.0 that interests them.

  1. Independent Study - Section A or B
  2. Community Partner - Section A or B
  3. Getting to Know YU Community - Section C

ED/EDST 3999 Section A and B  will offer students an independent study or be connected with a community partner.   Once students have enrolled in section or A or B.  Those students interested in a community partner will be submitting preferences for their preferred community partners in mid-late August. Stay tuned for more information in August regarding the submission of community partner preferences.

ED/EDST 3999 Section C - Getting to Know YU:  This course offers students opportunities to engage in learning about educational studies in context. Portfolios of students’ academic work in educational studies are created and used as a point of departure for fieldwork experiences in settings engaged in educational work. An analytical report commenting on the learning in context is the culminating activity of the course. An important focus of the course is developing the skills necessary to do an inquiry project in the next EIC course.

Getting to Know YU Community Placement:  The EDST3999 Section C Cohort will be paired specifically with Getting to Know YU. Getting to Know YU is a new university-community partnership program aimed at inviting students in grades 9 and 10 to imagine themselves as York University students. Getting to Know YU pairs high school students with a university mentor and invites them to engage in a menu of university-wide events that would expose them to some of the programs, clubs, and supports through both remote and in-person student engagement events across the university campus.  As a participant in EDST3999 C, you are committing to serving as a member of the Getting to Know YU planning team and as a mentor to high school students. Mentors will attend university-wide events with the high school students as well as plan and host monthly sessions that will debrief the experiences as well as invite them to reflect on how they might imagine themselves as university students.

Given the specific partnership with Getting to Know YU and EDST3999 C, students who enroll in this section will need to commit to the following fixed and flexible schedule:

  • Attend scheduled classes related to addressing the course content of EDST3999 (as needed on Wednesdays from 2:30 - 5:30 pm)
  • Attend scheduled Getting to Know YU Placement Meetings which include program planning, mentorship training sessions, etc.  (as needed on Wednesdays from 2:30 - 5:30 pm)
  • Attend scheduled mentorship sessions with high school students (at least once a month with a flexible schedule that meets both participant and mentor availability)
  • Attend as many university-wide events as articulated on the Getting To Know YU Menu of Events (flexible schedule)
