ABSTRACT: This paper discusses intersections between the Ontario Curriculum for Mathematics for grades 7 and 8  (Ontario Ministry of Education 2020) and instances of technological and statistical learning that are embedded within the curriculum. It highlights opportunities for the use of R programming in the mathematics classroom to develop the technological and programming skills needed for further study in mathematics and statistics as well as the self-efficacy and problem-solving skills needed in the workplace.

Reminder 2022 BEd Graduates ~ Apply to the Ontario College of Teachers for your Membership registration
BEd students graduating in June 2022 will be applying to the Ontario College of Teachers to become a certified member. There are several steps students will need to do to ensure there are no delays nominating BEd graduates.

  1. Review the OCT application information at  https://apps.oct.ca/OLR/Template.aspx?action=rege
  2. Apply for OCT membership/registration: Visit: www.oct.ca select Members and then Create an Account. In order for the BEd Student Services Office to send your recommendation, we require the six-digit OCT registration number for each graduating teacher candidate.
  3. Submit the six-digit Ontario College Teachers (OCT) registration number to the Faculty of Education. The online form is available on the Faculty of Education website.
  4. Apply to graduate (degree audit review):   Only Concurrent BEd students needed to apply to graduate online using the convocation website at  http://www.yorku.ca/mygrad/preparing/apply  Deadline was March 1, 2022.  Please note, Concurrent BEd students may only see their Bachelor of Education record when they requested to graduate.  These students also needed to submit a request for degree audit of their undergraduate program.  The form to submit the request is https://registrar.yorku.ca/graduation/apply/forms . Students in the Consecutive BEd model will be automatically reviewed for degree completion.
  5. Send Transcripts to OCT ~ Graduating BEd teacher candidates will need to order all post-secondary transcripts and be sent to the Ontario College of Teachers. When ordering transcripts, please indicate that you wish for your York University transcript to be sent upon degree completion. Please order your transcript while completing your OCT application, using the OUAC Transcript Request available at https://www.ouac.on.ca/apply/oct/en_CA/user/login
  6. Recommendation to OCT - The Faculty of Education will only send your recommendation to OCT following degree(s) completion. Transcripts ordered by the student and the recommendation sent by the Faculty of Education are required for certification.

Those students who have submitted their request for Temporary Certificate and been recommended to OCT the Faculty of Education, Office of Student Services will use this information (OCT Registry number)  for late May OCT recommendation/ submission. Students will need to re-order their York U. transcript to show OCT the degree(s) conferred.

This will also include the Toronto Metropolitan University ECS BA/PJ BEd and the Waaban Indigenous Education BEd students who will be completing the BEd program requirements end of July and requested the Temporary Certificate

Bachelor of Education Teaching Certification It's important to remember that the BEd is a full-time academic program that has a very full schedule, and the degree is accredited as an in-person program; with the professional nature of the program and expectations from the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT), it is also expected that students attend classes together in order to enrich their learning experiences and to prepare them to enter the teaching profession.  Visit the YU Better Together Information regarding current COVID-19 information and updates.
