IMPORTANT - BEd Students heading into Year 2 for FW 2023-2024 must submit Practicum Placement Zone preferences and School Board Choice
BEd students returning to complete Year 2 must submit their Practicum Placement Location/Zone Choice for the 2023-2024 academic year. Students will log on to the Practicum Information Management System (PIMs) to select school geographical zone preferences and School Board choice of either Public or Catholic.

The online form is due no later than Friday, April 14, 2023. Once logged in to PIMs, click on “Practicum Placement Preferences” to complete the form.  If you do not have the “Practicum Placement Preferences” option available to you, please email practicumoffice@edu.yorku.ca.

Advising packages for BEd students year 2 (Semester 3 ad 4) 2023-24
The Students Services team will be working on the Yr. 2  Advising/Enrollment packages for FW 2023.   Once the packages are complete, they will be sent by email to all students moving into year 2 and continuing in the BEd program this September.  Included in the package will be the course schedule, Monday - Friday class schedule, F/W ED elective choices, ED 2 Practicum meetings, reminder to reapply for Police Record Check/VSS and any important dates for FW 2023 academic year.  Plan to have the packages ready by mid-May or earlier.

June 2023 graduation - BEd students  https://www.yorku.ca/convocation/  
BEd students graduating in June 2023 will be applying to the Ontario College of Teachers to become a certified member. There are several steps students will need to do to ensure there are no delays nominating BEd graduates.  Full nomination to the Ontario College of Teachers by the Faculty of Education will not be submitted until late May 2023 when final grades and practicum days are completed successfully.

  1. Review the OCT application information at  https://apps.oct.ca/OLR/Template.aspx?action=rege
  2. Apply for OCT membership/registration: Visit: www.oct.ca select Members and then Create an Account. In order for the BEd Student Services Office to send your recommendation, we require the six-digit OCT registration number for each graduating teacher candidate.
  3. Submit the six-digit Ontario College Teachers (OCT) registration number by June 1, 2023 to the Faculty of Education. The online form is available on the Faculty of Education website.
  4. Apply to graduate (degree audit review):   Only Concurrent BEd students  need to apply to graduate online using the convocation Website at  http://www.yorku.ca/mygrad/preparing/apply  Deadline to apply has been extended to April 12, 2023 and students requesting degree audit need to email degaud@yorku.ca.   Please note, Concurrent BEd students may only see their Bachelor of Education record when requesting to graduate.  These students will also need to submit a request for degree audit of their undergraduate program.  The form to submit the request is https://registrar.yorku.ca/graduation/apply/forms Students in the Consecutive BEd model will be automatically reviewed for degree completion.
  5. Send Transcripts to OCT ~ Graduating BEd teacher candidates will need  to order all post-secondary transcripts and be sent to the Ontario College of Teachers. The Faculty of Education can not order students transcripts, its the responsibility of students.   When ordering transcripts, please indicate that you wish for your York University transcript to be sent after degree completion. Please order your transcript while completing your OCT application, using the OUAC Transcript Request available at https://www.ouac.on.ca/apply/oct/en_CA/user/login
  6. Recommendation to OCT - The Faculty of Education will only send your recommendation to OCT following degree(s) completion. Transcripts ordered by the student and the recommendation sent by the Faculty of Education are required for certification.

June Convocation - Faculty of Education 
Graduating BEd and BA students should view the information on the university’s convocation Web site for details regarding the ceremony and diploma services. All students planned to graduate need to register for the ceremony. Spring convocation dates and registering for the ceremony will be posted here: https://www.yorku.ca/convocation/

BA EDST level 3 and 4 students - The Faculty of Education, Student Services team will be offering virtual information sessions in early June to provide information on course offering, degree program report, planning your schedule and important dates.  The date and time will be posted in the May 2023 newsletter.

BA students who are moving into level 4 for FW 2023-24 (will have completed EDST 3999) can plan one of the two  ED/EDST 4999 Experiential Education options.

Students interested in the C4: Cross Campus Capstone Classroom must apply for the C4 Fall/Winter 2023/2024 session. Registration is open now for the C4 option and can plan to attend an information session to get more information on this.

Please note, there is a summer offering of C4 (C4 Sprint 3.00 credits)   If students  enroll in the summer option they can not enroll in the FW 2023-24 C4 section.  More information is available at https://www.yorku.ca/c4/what-is-c4/

BA EDST Program requirements

IMPORTANT Bachelor of Education (BEd) course requirements
Students needing to double check the course requirements for the BEd program should visit YU Academic Calendar's.  Courses and Practicum requirements for all the teaching panels are posted. Visit https://calendars.students.yorku.ca/2022-2023/programs/ED/education  and select Faculty Rules and then Course Requirements and Specializations.

Grade requirements for the Bachelor of Education

  • Students will be ineligible to continue in the Bachelor of Education teaching certification degree / program if they receive less than a grade of C+ in any course taken for education credit.
  • In the Bachelor of Education (BEd) program, students complete both a community-based practicum placement and three school-based practicum placements. School placements are supervised by an Ontario Certified Teacher. Students are required to complete all practicum days successfully in order to complete their degree programs. Further details on the practicum experience can be found online.

Summer work opportunity - RECRUITMENT & CAMPUS AMBASSADOR
The Faculty of Education, Office of Student Services Recruitment  and Campus Ambassador.  We are looking for a York student who is eager to meet and guide new and continuing students with York’s Faculty of Education programs,  provide campus tours, general information on the Bachelor of Education and/or BA Educational Studies,  support new student group advising sessions with the Faculty of Education Academic Advisors and be part of the YU Start Leaders and Becoming YU.

The position is a Work Study – LEAP Leadership, Engagement and Ambassadorship Program (LEAP) – LEAP positions focus on engaging undergraduate students in roles within the faculties, colleges, programs, or the university at large, that enhance the overall student experience at York university. LEAP roles allow students to develop skills such as leadership, peer mentoring, and peer support within the University setting and are less clerical in nature than the typical Work/Study position (e.g., less than 20% clerical). Politics4Future: Infusing Sustainability and Global Citizenship into Teacher Education - offered between March and June

Smart Conservation and Futures of Planetary Health Please find details for an upcoming seminar that your students may be interested in. This seminar, with James Stinson and Lee McLoughlin, will discuss conservation expansion to meet the global biodiversity agreements and the risks to exacerbating conservation-related displacement and violence. To promote a more sustainable and just future for all life on Earth, they advocate for approaches that support Indigenous and community-based efforts that care for both people and the planet.

The Dean Ron Owston Award will be granted annually to one student enrolled in the BA Educational Studies Program and one student in the Master of Leadership and Community Engagement in the Faculty of Education with an award valued at $500.00 each. The awards will be granted to domestic or international students who, during their first year have a minimum 7.5 or A average and demonstrate financial need. The undergraduate award will be adjudicated by the Faculty of Education awards committee and the graduate award will be adjudicated by the Graduate Program in the Faculty of Education.
