Welcome to the Toronto Metropolitan University BA Early Childhood Studies and the Waaban Indigenous BEd students who began the BEd teaching certif cation program with the Faculty of Education early May. Reminder, look at the Google calendar to see class plans (dates/time and location).
IMPORTANT Bachelor of Education (BEd) course requirements
Students needing to double check the course requirements for the BEd program should visit YU Academic Calendar's. Courses and Practicum requirements for all the teaching panels are posted. Visit https://calendars.students.yorku.ca/2022-2023/programs/ED/education and select Faculty Rules and then Course Requirements and Specializations.
Grade requirements for the Bachelor of Education
- Students will be ineligible to continue in the Bachelor of Education teaching certification degree / program if they receive less than a grade of C+ in any course taken for education credit.
- In the Bachelor of Education (BEd) program, students complete both a community-based practicum placement and three school-based practicum placements. School placements are supervised by an Ontario Certified Teacher. Students are required to complete all practicum days successfully in order to complete their degree programs. Further details on the practicum experience can be found online.
REMINDRER June 2023 graduation - BEd students https://www.yorku.ca/convocation/ BEd students graduating in June 2023 will be applying to the Ontario College of Teachers to become a certified member. There are several steps students will need to take to ensure there are no delays nominating BEd graduates. Full nomination to the Ontario College of Teachers by the Faculty of Education will not be submitted until late May /early June 2023 when final grades and practicum days are completed successfully.

- Apply for OCT membership/registration: Visit: oct.caselect Members and then Create an Account. In order for the BEd Student Services Office to send your recommendation, we require the six-digit OCT registration number for each graduating teacher candidate.
- Submit the six-digit Ontario College Teachers (OCT) registration number by June 1, 2023to the Faculty of Education. The online form is available on the Faculty of Education website.
- Apply to graduate (degree audit review): Only Concurrent BEd students need to apply to graduate online using the convocation Website at http://www.yorku.ca/mygrad/preparing/apply Deadline has passed for June 2023 and can apply for October 2023 Please note, Concurrent BEd students may only see their Bachelor of Education record when they requested to graduate. These students will have also needed to submit a request for a degree audit of their undergraduate program. The form to submit the request (October convocation) is https://registrar.yorku.ca/graduation/apply/forms Students in the Consecutive BEd model will be automatically reviewed for degree completion.
- Send Transcripts to OCT~ Graduating BEd teacher candidates will need to order all post-secondary transcripts and be sent to the Ontario College of Teachers. The Faculty of Education cannot order students transcripts, it’s the responsibility of students. When ordering transcripts, please indicate that you wish for your York University transcript to be sent after degree completion. Please order your transcript while completing your OCT application, using the OUAC Transcript Request available at https://www.ouac.on.ca/apply/oct/en_CA/user/login
- Recommendation to OCT- The Faculty of Education will only send your recommendation to OCT following degree(s) completion. Transcripts ordered by the student and the recommendation sent by the Faculty of Education are required for certification.
Those students who have submitted their request for Temporary Certificate and been recommended to OCT the Faculty of Education, Office of Student Services will use this information (OCT Registry number) for late May OCT recommendation/ submission. Students will need to re-order their York U. transcript to show OCT the degree(s) conferred.
This will also include the Toronto Metropolitan University ECS BA/PJ BEd students completing the BEd program requirements end of July and requested the Temporary Certificate
June Convocation - Faculty of Education is June 16th
Graduating BEd and BA students should view the information on the university’s convocation Web site for details regarding the ceremony and diploma services. All students planned to graduate need to register for the ceremony. Spring convocation dates and registering for the ceremony will be posted here: https://www.yorku.ca/convocation/

BEd students moving into Year 2 FW 2023-24
The Undergraduate Program Office will be offering two Information Sessions for those students in the BEd program who will be enrolled in Year 2 this F/W 2023-24 session. The sessions will be held on Monday, May 29th at 2:30pm and Wednesday, May 31st at 5:30pm. Those students who cannot join the session we will be recording it and posting in the June 2023 newsletter. Advising packages for BEd yr. 2 (Semester 3 and 4) 2023-24
The Students Services team will be working on the Yr. 2 Advising/Enrollment packages for FW 2023. Once the packages are complete, they will be sent by email to all students returning and continuing in the BEd program this September. Included in the package will be the course schedule, Monday - Friday class schedule, Winter ED elective choices, ED 2 Practicum meetings, reminder to reapply for Police Record Check/VSS and any important dates for FW 2023 academic year. Plan to have the packages ready by the third week of May.
BA Educational Studies students, The Office of Students Services hosted a virtual information session in March inviting year one BA students moving into year two (level one to level two) an overview of the BA EDST course requirements, Degree Progress Report and summer courses. BA EDST students moving into Level 4 and plans for ED/EDST 4999 6.00 We will send out more information in late May via email with the date and time of the session to those students enrolling in EDST 4999. The session will be recorded for those students who cannot join us. BA students who are moving into level 4 for FW 2023-24 (will have completed EDST 3999) can plan one of the two ED/EDST 4999 Experiential Education options.
Students interested in the C4: Cross Campus Capstone Classroom must apply for the C4 Fall/Winter 2023/2024 session. Registration is open now for the C4 option and can plan to attend an information session to get more information on this.
Please note, there is a summer offering of C4 (C4 Sprint 3.00 credits) If students enrolled in the summer option, they cannot enroll in the FW 2023-24 C4 section. More information is available at https://www.yorku.ca/c4/what-is-c4/
BA Educational Studies students - Information Sessions Level 2 and 3
The Office of Students Services will be providing two virtual information sessions for BA students moving into level 2 and 3 (level 2 = 30 credits and level 3 = 54 credits complete by end of summer) this September. The sessions will be planned for early June. Date and time will be shared with students by email to book for the session.
We will discuss courses planned for FW 2023-24, program requirements, how to review your Degree Progress Report, and for those students who will have completed a minimum of 54 credits by August 2023, enroll in EDST 3999 - Experience, Inquire and Contribute (EIC). The EIC offers learning placements within the community or in related organizations as part of the Bachelor of Arts in Educational Studies program. The placements are workplace-based learning to put theory to practice in the field of learning and education. The sessions will be recorded for those students who cannot join us.

The OCT Scholarship Program / Le Programme de bourses de l'Ordre
The Ontario College of Teachers’ Scholarship Program supports and sustains excellence in the teaching profession by reinforcing high standards and professional competence. College scholarships reward the achievements and characteristics of teacher candidates who model the ethical and professional standards, including care, trust, respect and integrity.
We are pleased to inform you that our 2023 scholarship application process is now open. Teacher candidates in an Ontario consecutive or concurrent teacher education program who will graduate in 2024 are eligible to apply for up to two of four scholarships of $1,500 each:
- The Joseph W. Atkinson Scholarship recognizes a candidate who demonstrates both outstanding academic achievement and experience that reflects a high level of preparedness for teacher education.
- The Brian P. McGowan Scholarship for Resilience, named in honour of the College’s fourth registrar, recognizes a candidate who demonstrates resilience and tenacity in the face of adversity.
- The Ontario College of Teachers Primary/Junior or Junior/Intermediate Scholarship and the Ontario College of Teachers Intermediate/Senior Scholarship recognize candidates on a holistic basis that considers extracurricular activities and background experiences.
While applicants may apply for two scholarships, they can be awarded only one of them -such that four individual recipients are recognized. More information about the scholarship program and how to apply can be found on our website. The deadline for applying is August 31, 2023, at 5 p.m.
